no. matthew 6:33 is one of my life verses, and a promise that God's proven himself over and over again.

  • nicolevw@xanga

No.   He desires (and requires) our first fruits, not our leftovers.  No matter what we pull in, we will always give first - THAT is what the Lord blesses.

Yup.  I now tithe more.  *hehe*

@gabrielpeter@xanga - I too have set out to give more than I have given last year in tithes and offerings. The reason is that I am putting action to my faith in GOD vs. mammon.

  • mamajoyjoy@momaroo

We haven't cut back in terms of the actual tithe (10%), but Hubby was laid off, and as income decreases, so does the 10% amt. He is starting a new job next week though. Hooray! The perfect timing too.

I've always thought Tithing was a funny word.

  • withallyourheart@xanga

Yes! Not only has it effected how much we can afford to give but also our attitude about giving.

It feels like one more bill we cant pay. should we go into debt to tith? (Some ppl say you should. But my grandma tells me the bible says not to go into debt.)The only excess $ we spend is on food, we really can't cut back anywhere. We tith what we have and pray for God to bless us so we can afford to give more.

@withallyourheart@xanga - Never go into debt to pay a tithe! In fact, The LORD is more interested in 'Free-Will' offerings.

  • flowerspushthrudirt@xanga

It hasn't yet.  But it will.

I'll still always give 10% plus more for other ministries.

But my company is closing.  And 10% of unemployment is going to be considerably less than 10% of my paycheck.

    :(

  • Doubledb@xanga

Sadly yes... I am fearful of giving money because I feel like I need to safe any I have extra in case something happens. And I a young minister. It is just so hard with bills and student loans - I should start giving again. Starting is always the most difficult part.

  • Bibliothecaria@xanga

I think I'm actually giving more now.  I've been fascinated by the George Muller story for a few years now and I'd like to try his methods in my own life.  Besides, as my pastor said, if I don't give while I'm poor, how am I going to learn to give when (or if) I'm rich?

  • HLPU@xanga

No, but I do not criticize those who have suffered and cannot.  May God grant them mercy and wisdom and comfort!

Tithing is a principle of faith and has nothing to do with money. We either believe the Lord's promises or we don't. Through regular life and four layoffs, we have always given our tithing to the Lord first. I try to think of it as laying it on the altar. Although things have been tight at times and we had to seriously adjust our lifestyle, there always seemed to be enough, even miraculously.

On a side note, tithing is ten percent. You can’t give more or less tithing. You either tithe or you don’t. If you give less, you are not tithing and lose out on the full blessings that come from exercising faith in Jesus. If you give more, it’s an offering for the budget or building fund or something else. The Lord still blesses us for whatever we give, but we tie His hands when we don’t exercise faith.

  • Stereoblind@xanga

Pretty smart of God to simply ask for 10% of our increase. Not a flat 10% or a minimum amount.

10% of less money is less than 10% of more money. So the recession just means the amount I send in is less, or in cases where there is no profit, there's nothing to tithe at all.
    It works out perfectly.
    Big surprise. :)
  • ambidreamz@xanga

I'm currently unemployed so I hope that God understands that there is nothing for me to tithe. But when I was working, yes 10% was what I aimed for. But definitely it's out of free-will, I don't think God wants us to feel forced to give.

All of my friends are committed Christians, even I am that but I find it hard to keep on trusting God when I have to keep begging for money. Efforts to get income are fruitless. The Lord gives us the ability to produce income. He also denies us that ability.

The Bible was so positive that the works of our hands will bear fruit--yet my business does not generate income. Deuteronomy said that we will build good houses and live in it--yet soon I could lose this place where I live now.

I cry out in desperation to ask God what to say to my creditors--but there is no reply. I had to tell them something and just trust God to come and help. The moment of need came and went--once, twice and in two days, maybe the third time.

Where is God? I run to him but it seems that He runs away from me. it is true that the Lord did not promise us a storm free but rather a storm proof life. I go to him to seek refuge but the storm continues to batter me. I find no refuge.
