Do You Only Know What You Stand Against, Not What You Stand For?
by Carl Bliss of Faith & Geekery
I am in the middle of a season of lots of travel for work. When traveling alone, I tend to hit up the fast food locations way too often.Last night I got a bit sick of that and decided to try getting a sandwich at the hotel’s lounge. I sat at the bar and ordered a soda and a reuben sandwich. The room was empty except for the bartender, me, and a set of keys left by a guy who had to run up to his room.
The bartender asked what brought me to town, and I told him I was doing some work for a local Christian radio station. He hadn’t heard of the station, but he did tell me about a gal who used to work at a restaurant he owned. He said she was a Baptist who had no problem letting people know about her beliefs.
One particular evening, Joan Osborne’s “One of Us” came on the house music system.
What if God was one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home.He indicated to her that that was such a neat song. Her immediate reaction was to berate the song as being way off base and somewhat offensive.
That was his relationship with a Christian. One who was quick to defend her beliefs, but not share them. All he knew was what she stood AGAINST. She could have easily taken that opportunity to share that God DID in fact become one of us.
Is that your reputation as a Christian? Are you prepared to be defensive and show the world what you don’t stand for? Or are you prepared to be offensive and show the world who it is that stands for you?
I think she missed a perfect opportunity. Come to think of it, so did I.

That's great advice for all of us.
Definitely food for thought, although I think I can honestly say that what I stand for and against are equally known, because I share neither one unless someone either asks, or unwittingly presents me with the perfect opportunity to speak of them, or if it comes up in a conversation that I can't pass up sharing them (I don't look for openings to share them). I prefer not to be in anyone's face whether I am talking about being for or against something. It's better received that way.
My question is, is it that people are quicker to know and speak of what they stand against rather than what they stand for, or is it that we all only remember what they stand against because it is usually so much more vehement and stands out more?
Is that your reputation as a Christian?
I don't have a reputation as a Christian. I have a reputation as a human being.
Care for others, listen to others, counsel others, offer charity to others. It's a human thing. Jesus was totally human.
And nobody needs to know what church I go to.
Who do you carry the torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Do you carry it around just to burn things down?
. . .
What did you learn tonight,
While shouting so loud, you barely joyous, broken thing?
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say.
You were freezing over hell.
You were bringing on the end you do so well.
You can only blame yourself, is what I say.
Oh, order your daughters to ignore me,
Think that will sort me?
And sweep me under the rug?
While you're beating with a book
Everyone that book tells you to love.

Oh, wow. What a sad story.
I actually have more trouble deciding what I stand against when it comes to some things other Christians like to vehemently oppose. I see some popular controversial issues as a mere distraction from the big picture. I do know what I stand for, though, or, more importantly, as you said, I know Who stands for me. I'm committed to offering what I know of Him to others, hopefully in a way that attracts. Like you, though, I've sure had my share of missed opportunities. Silence is deadly.
I'll go for neither, really. I mean, I'll talk to my friends about religions; but I won't try and get them to agree. I won't try to teach them anything. I leave that up to them; they can find their own learning experiences. Plus, it's just not my business what they believe.
I definitely don't get defensive about my religion, either. What does that accomplish? Pretty much: Nothing. Why should I get defensive? We each deserve to believe whatever we want. So, they disagree? So what? As long as they don't try to shove their beliefs on me, it's all good; because I don't shove mine off on them.
wow. something about this post really opened my eyes. i want to strengthen myself to be the offensive.
I missed an opportunity the other day. I was talking with a co-worker and then had a perfect opportunity to bring my faith and its impact on my life. For some reason though I couldn't think of anything that didnt' sound cheesy or like a corny halmark card so I didnt' say anything. I asked God that if he wanted me to say something to this person that he will give me another opportunity. Maybe I shoud of said something. I am not sure. I felt at that moment though that if I did say something it may have an opposite effect. Which I didnt' want to do all.
"Rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer," (Romans 12:12)
Sometimes
you have to defend your beliefs because they will get attacked. But
sometimes it's a lot like telling a starving homeless man to take a
bath- great advice but it is utterly pointless. Basically just
nit-picking.
I was just saying this today. How so many people (from all backgrounds, religions and non-religions) are willing to fight to death over things they're against. But so few people are willing to fight to save something. To save someone. How many people are off writing firey blogs about the lack of water in Africa? Or about the orphans in need of homes in Guatamala? Or the amputees in Cambodia?
Yes, they exist, but they certainly are in the minority. They're the ones brave enough to fight for instead of against.
Sad story, and often the way it goes with most christians, I have learned. I'm so sick of the lot of them in these parts. People are so quick to condemn, get angry, and kick into defense mode. It drives me mad, and is a big reason why I refuse to attend any of their churches. Around here, I would be looked down upon if I walked into a "church" dressed moderately in a pair of pants, even khakis! My eyebrow is pierced, and I am not allowed in my parent's presence whilst wearing it because it's nothing but pure evil. I take it out before I visit them, but sometimes I forget and have to take it out on my way. I made the mistake of leaving the barbell or whatever they're called there once, called and asked my little bro to put it away for me in a safe place, and had my dad talk pretty rough over it...that it was never to be seen in his home again, not even outside of my eyebrow!
Anyway, I'm rambling! Good post!
@LoBornlite@xanga - Jesus was totally human, true. But he was also totally God too. He had two natures, both human and divine. And you are right that no one needs to know what Church you go to.... but they should be able to see Him in you and through you, and know that you are different than most people they meet. That is what it means to be a Christian in this world. To be His hands, His feet, His voice, and share His love for the people in this world whom He loves, but don't know Him.
It is easy to rail against the evil in this world, and neglect to proclaim it's beauty. And it is easy to preach against the speck in our brother's eye, when we have the big ole 2X4 in our own.
When we look for the good first, but being prepared to deal with evil... when we love first, and not with conditions and strings.... then we will know what it is to be like Him. God loved us enough to become one us, in all things but sin. Jesus was pro-Man. But his support and love for Man was for Man to be better, to "be all that he could be", to be holy, to be in love with God and thus his fellow man. Love first, and allow that love to be the instrument of change for all sin.
How about neither and not sharing unwanted information? =D
Great advice....we all need to be willing to share what God has done for us!

I have had the priviledge of working with the greatest people in world: first responders and school teachers.
Surely they are Jesus' arms and legs. But when the bleeding starts nobody cares which church anybody goes to. The subject never comes up.
