by mr mapleJust some advice from a medical perspective (having recently completed an OB/GYN rotation)...
1) Metformin is a very safe and commonly used drug, primarily for insulin control in the context of diabetes. Not to say that it doesn't have any side effects, but certainly less common and worrisome than that of the contraceptive pill, so I would strongly encourage giving metformin a fair trial before calling it quits; additionally, weight loss & exercise has very similar effects to metformin & PCOS (but in an all natural way!). Also, it's not unusual for the effects of the pill to last for up to a year after stopping.
2) Theo/philosophically, in terms of discerning God's will, I wonder what the difference is between taking contraception or wanting to get pregnant naturally or having a child via adoption. I'm having a hard time seeing why you're having a struggle in the perceived conflict between God "wanting" you to get pregnant naturally vs. adoption... if you already decided to use contraception in the first place. Not that I'm necessarily saying contraception is wrong, but it just seems to me that the logic behind using contraception should naturally also be expressed in your decision to get pregnant and/or adopt. Does this make sense?

God's will was to, "be fruitful and multiply." We're a big herd now.
i'd adopt just because there are so many children without homes, but I'll never be able to because I'm crazy, and I don't like the genes I carry.
what does adoption have to do with diabetes? this sounds like medical advertising to me.
"Be fruitful and multiply" is arguably the only of God's commandment the human race has overwhelmingly obeyed.
@SirNickDon@xanga - Hahaha --- I must agree. Sorry if you didn't mean that to be funny but, I definitely chuckled when I read that.
@SirNickDon@xanga - haha, sad but true.
I disagree with most modern medicine, and when I hear lists of 'side effects' (aka possible ways your body can be poisoned by the drug) it always makes me so sad and sick to my stomach. I realize you've just been through med school, so you're only relaying what you've been taught/believe to be true, but I believe drugs should only be taken as a last result if you are in a life or death situation and there is no other method of treatment. People are far too quick to buy into the latest prescriptions as though it is a part of life and rarely take into account the possible causes of their problems and other forms of correcting it. And I think in this case, adoption could be a wonderful option - both for the parent and the child.
@squanto_07@xanga - @quiet_strength - PCOS as a cause of infertility is linked to a phenomenon called insulin insensitivity, which is a root cause of diabetes. Therefore, physiologically speaking, it is not unreasonable to see if metformin can help infertility in cases of PCOS.
I also think that medication is often overprescribed, but that needs to be distinguished from reasonable treatment of a disease in its early stages. Sometimes diseases can be much, much worse if people wait till the absolute last minute before seeking treatment, and even then not all treatments need to be pharmacologic. For example, someone with high cholesterol is at a higher risk for a heart attack; the data strongly indicates that lowering cholesterol levels (to a point) greatly reduces such a risk. While it can be greatly decreased by changes in diet and exercise, medications often help... and believe me, healthcare gets much more complicated AFTER a heart attack. In that sense, taking one or two medications to prevent one from happening in the first place makes much more sense than waiting until afterwards and trying to patch things up.
While some skepticism towards drug therapies is necessary, we should also be careful not to overreact with excessive cynicism. It's easy to hate on drug companies, but the truth is medicine is very effective... when used appropriately!
@WasaiWarrior@xanga - I understand what you are saying, but I think it is the very reason that people are misinformed or uninformed alternative treatments or that they just don't take precautions about things like diet is why it gets to that degree for so many people and medicinal intervention is necessary. Long ago, before modern medicine became so widespread and developed, people learned from their grandparents things from the earth to use for healing. I realize it too can be lacking in some ways, and I try not to completely discredit the medical industry, but much of it is corrupted and pharmaceuticals are more interested in making money than helping heal people. It's okay if you don't agree I just thought I'd expound on my opinion a bit.
@quiet_strength - Understood. Well articulated. =)
i know of many people who have thought it impossible to conceive (one was a woman nearing her sixties) who had no problems with it after a colon cleanse and a heavy metal cleanse. Our bodies weren't meant to deal with all the things we subject them to and there are consequences, like infertility. Mice that are fed processed foods become infertile after a few generations.
I see your logic, but having not read the other post I can't really comment on that... :)
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
