  • QOTD: Your Take on the Bush Presidency

    palm by mr palm

The presidency of George W. Bush has now come to a close. Clearly, it was one that generated controversy and stirred passionate emotions within all corners of not just the American political realm, but the entire world.

Christians walked a tenuous road with President Bush. They are largely credited with securing his victories in 2000 and 2004. They appreciated his testimony as a man saved from alcoholism after a meeting Billy Graham and devoting his life to following Jesus Christ.  They were thrilled to hear Scripture quoted in national addresses.

However, issues like the Iraq war, the economic downfall, and various scandals within the Republican party faded the gleam that President Bush enjoyed with the evangelical community (regardless of his level of involvement in said issues).

As a Christian, how do you feel about the presidency of George W. Bush?

Not a Christian... But I'm so glad it's over! Yay President Obama!

  • icicle84@xanga

I think the world will never know the truly good things about the Bush presidency (like, how many terrorist attacks were thwarted because he stayed on the offensive, and didn't play isolationist).

I think any president dealt his hand would come out on the losing side of public opinion.

Oh, I don't think he was perfect (and probably made more mistakes that the media didn't crucify him for than he did that they did crucify him for), but he was nowhere close to the worst we've ever had.

I was proud to call George W. Bush my president, and am proud to call him my former president.

  • FallenReign@xanga

-shrugs- He got dealt a pretty bad hand, and I think he did the best he could. I don't blame him for what happened, aand...so yeah. Just my opinion.

  • too_pretty_to_die@xanga

i'm absolutely thrilled that it's over.  hopefully we'll be able to regain the respect he lost us in the international community.  clearly, the lesson learned: just because a leader advertises himself as a Christian, doesn't make him the right guy for the job.  i'd be thrilled if an atheist had been in charge for the last eight years, if it meant we wouldn't have the problems we have right now.

  • Strangebrain@xanga

I think he was a moron, Good riddance!

  • Stephanie_J_B@xanga

I think he was a great President and I am sorry that's is over. No one is perfect, but really, how many people would've done better as a President in this difficult time? Whenever I hear people complaining about his presidency, I am tempted to ask them if they think they could have done better! I shudder to think of what Obama will bring us....

  • Pickwick12@xanga

I didn't agree with Bush on every social issue, but I respect him, and I believe he did his best as a Christian and a patriot.

I believe that Bush's strongest area was national defense, and I am grateful for the amazing job he did and for the tough decisions he made in spite of criticizing voices. Just like the largely-unreported fact that evidence of a nuclear program has been found in Iraq, we will probably never know a lot of the good things Bush did. It is absolutely amazing to consider that it has been seven years since 9/11, and there has not been another terrorist attack on US soil. I believe Bush is largely responsible for that.

Thank you, Mr. Bush, for giving us eight years of your life, eight of the toughest years in our nation's history. I won't forget.

  • scramBledmegZntoasT@xanga

So if President Bush is responsible for no attack in the last seven years, then isn't he responsible for the one that occurred on 9/11? I don't believe he was, by the way, it just seems to be a logical argument.

I don't think President Bush is a bad man, or wanted to do the wrong things. I think he had America's best interest at heart. The main problems I have with him is his seeming lack of desire to hear contradictory opinions and his lack of intellectual curiosity. I also am troubled by the fact that he felt that simply having half the country on his side was fine; he didn't need to be President of the whole country, just the part that agreed with him. He really hurt discourse in our country, and I hope that President Obama can improve things a little.

@Stephanie_J_B@xanga - That's President Obama. Please, at least, respect the office.

  • Stephanie_J_B@xanga

@scramBledmegZntoasT@xanga - Sorry....to be honest, I had forgotten that the inaugeration has offically taken place now. Guess that's what happens when I don't watch it on TV

  • devour_my_broken_soul@xanga

In light of the new take over, I wish we still had Bush, hate to say it... I was not a big fan of Bush but am not even a greater fan of Obama... I do not like socialists and one of the biggest ones shouldn't be running our democratic nation.

  • Pickwick12@xanga
    Bullseye!

@devour_my_broken_soul@xanga - Good point about socialism

  • nyclegodesi24@xanga

His biggest failures to me were in picking Michael Brown and 30-something other completely unqualified people for jobs in government, for picking people on the basis of their funding his campaign. That and deliberately lying about a connection between Iraq and Al Qaeda. The Patriot Act irritated me, but in retrospect I think the threat was very real, and if taking away some of my civil liberties saves my life, I'll put up with it.

I don't think i like him. But I don't think he's an idiot, and I don't think he deserves alot of the slams he's gotten from people. The war in Afghanistan was necessary. If it were Obama's or Clinton's term, it would have still happened.

  • devour_my_broken_soul@xanga

@Pickwick12@xanga - Thank you... Just concerns me. We are not a socialist or communist nation. We are a democracy and it's just hard to try and compare Obama who wants to change abortion policies, gay marriage policies, green policies, change movement from Iraq to Afghanistan etc to someone who held the original ideals that we were once a Christian country, and not question what his TRUE motives are for the American people.

  • kimchikid@xanga

I think that Bush was great. There are many things that he did that weren't publicized because the masses love to watch him fail. In China and the economic policies in East Asia were great ideas. Bush isn't given enough credit.

Obama on the other hand. I don't like him but I didn't like McCain either. Let's just wait and see how this turns out.

  • Burchai@xanga

I would give him a B on any normal grading scale. He was given a pretty dire situation when he started in Jan 2001. I know I am much safer in airports and on airplanes because of the things he had to implement after 9/11. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have wanted anyone else facing such a tragedy and I'm glad he went after who he could. People keep complaining about how we haven't found bin Laden but that's like trying to find a needle in a haystack...the haystack is the entire world. Not much else I can say...liberals are going to try to stain his name until they realize that what measures taken were necessary. I wonder how many more attacks we would have experienced if someone else was in power. That's it...

  • daneeyul@xanga

I think he had flaws and strengths, and like other people said, don't think he deserves the slams he gets. I didn't like him a lot of times, and I liked him at other times. He wasn't our best president ever, but he wasn't the worst. He does deserve more respect than we give him.

I don't much like Obama either, but he's our president, and I do respect that. I'm certainly praying for him.
  • XxFireXboltxX@xanga

I admire him for standing up for what he believed in. He was a much better President than some that we've had.

  • TrumvilleOrbison@xanga

Not a fan! I'm too excited right now to talk about W though.

    @scramBledmegZntoasT@xanga - I couldn't agree more. :]
  • JUSTAVAPORHERE@xanga

He's still got my vote! I'd like to see any other President take the hand he got dealt and see how well they would have done...Hurricane Katrina...911..Fortunately, most get to sit back and enjoy a good reputation during peacetime. He was just unfortunate not to be one of such, :)

I wish him the best, and though I didn't vote for Obama, I pray protection and wisdom  for him in leading our great country, :)

  • TexasAngelofRaine@xanga

The Bush presidency was  train wreck from start to finish that pretty much throwed us all in front of the train.I am so glad it's over. I am so proud to have Obama as our new president.

  • igloobear@xanga

As a Chinese American who pay extra attention on American-Sino relationship, I have to point out that Bush had done a lot of goods to the relationship. I give him an A on foreign policy.

Bush's reputation in Europe was bad. But my question is: do we care? All Europeans have had is absolute pacificism with no real solution. When facing murderer regimes like North Korea and Saddam of Iraq, I don't think absolute peace was just neither. I give Bush a B on the Iraq's invasion.
Katrina was bad, so do the Economy meltdown. Personally, I think it is not the problem of Bush but the whole nation. We overlook the aging problem of our infrastructure. American people are lacking of political will power to make deep change. Take a look at the fallen of GE, everybody knows that it was caused by the overpriced labor force, lousy design and short-sighted corporate culture. Yet, nobody were willing to change. Same thing applied to FEMA. I give Bush a passing grade C and wish that BHO would have the will power to make the change. Instead of bailing his UAL buddies out.
  • MiCheLLy789@xanga

@igloobear@xanga - I really like the points that you have made. I agree with your grading of each topic.

  • QuantumStorm@xanga

Bush had his ups and downs. I agreed with him on some decisions, disagreed with him on others. Most of the bad rap he's getting should really be directed at Congress; but hey, it's a lot easier to bash a single person than it is to bash several hundred.

@Stephanie_J_B@xanga - OMG, you people!!! Really? REALLY?

Obama is a Christian too, FYI... He goes to church and also knows how to quote Scripture - and you "shudder" to think what he's going to bring us? You are happy with our country the way it is right now? 2 wars still going? "Mission Accomplished"? The economy completely in the crapper?  Stop drinking the Kool-Aid! George W. Bush may be a just-fine person and a wonderful Christian but he was a horrible president!

The Christian right sure knows how to brainwash. I'd really love to hear the so-called "Religious Right" (neither) come out and say the truth - that it's really the far-right coalition of white people who look the same, think the same, and act the same and don't want anyone even slightly "different" : read: black, non-white, person of color, dissenter, gay/lesbian, ETC. That's the movement that got George W. Bush elected... make no mistake about it.

Wake up and welcome to the 21st century. We are moving forward. America is moving forward. President Obama has made it clear you are welcome to join in, or you are welcome to stand motionlessly on the sidelines and complain and moan about how your President isn't exactly like you.

And we are NOT A CHRISTIAN COUNTRY.
This country was founded so that everyone would and could have the freedom to practice what they believe; whatever their faith is. The only way that Christians can be totally free to be Christian is by having a government that is not aligned with any particular religious party.

Thank the Lord the nightmare of the past eight years is over! Let the change begin!!

  • nicolevw@xanga

I find it interesting that Obama supporters also say things like "glad the nightmare is over", " thankful that the reign of terror is over" (as someone on facebook said today) .......... they seem to think that Bush singlehandedly is responsible for all the problems!  I don't think so.  And here's news:  Obama wil not be able to singlehandedly turn America around!      I think Bush got dealt a tough hand these last 8 years.   Let's also not forget that he had an 87% approval rating after 9/11 ....AND, he did get majority vote four years ago.     People today (no matter which nation) are forgetful.    And 2 years from now, when Obama hasn't turned things around to the satisfaction of the people ....guess what?   People will whine and complain and start blaming Obama for their troubles.

Bush is not to blame for all the problems - and Obama will not be able to fix them all.  Stop creating "monsters" and "saviours"!
