  • VIDEO: The Donut Man + Catholic Conversion

    By miss marigold

As much as I enjoyed Rescue Rangers and Ghostbusters as a kid, I wish there were more people I could reminisce with about old-school Christian kids' shows, like Superbook, or one of my personal favorites, The Donut Man.

While I enjoyed re-watching these videos on YouTube, I really could have gone without "I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart" on mental loop for the next couple of hours. More like the joy, joy, joy, joy stuck in my head (cue gong sound.)

Interestingly enough, Rob Evans, who played the Donut Man, converted to Catholicism about two years ago. You can read more about it in his blog, Late For Supper: The Conversion and Communion of Rob Evans, where he says that no bitterness occurred in his move from the Evangelical church (where he was for 33 years) - in fact, Evangelical churches are still happy to have him give talks or peform, which he still does, "because young kids will always need to hear about the love of God—whether they be Catholic, Protestant or come from families with no faith at all."

Did you watch The Donut Man while growing up? Would you show it to your own kids?

    • About Me: College senior wondering how graduation will affect her ongoing quarter-life crisis. Releasing the consequent surplus of angst and neurotic impulses by ranting about the crazy campus life she'll probably miss give or take 20 years; postponing adulthood by reading sub-par YA literature (specifically that featuring vampire boyfriends) in her spare time. Has underlined a good 1/3 of Ecclesiastes and Philippians in her Bible. Is deathly afraid of snails (not the dinky ones, the 4-inch LSFJSKmutaaantKLSJFK ones from my tropical homeland.) An English major who cannot, for the life of her, master comma usage and the analogies section on standardized tests.
