inspired by a post by Croteau_4_ChristUniversity of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has used his on-field attire to help make what may be the Bible's most popular verse a little more popular.
Eye black is a kind of grease that football players apply under their eyes to reduce glare. In a game that features 300-lb lineman chasing you down at full speed, you want all of the visibility that you can get. Incidentally, eye black is useful for more than seeing that last tackler or staying focused on a pass. Players frequently inscribe messages to express their personalities on the field. Examples include the always-fitting "Hi Mom" or the area code where the player grew up.
In last Thursday's BCS Championship game against the Oklahoma Sooners, the Florida Gators' Tebow inscribed "John 3:16" into his eye black. Thanks to various closeups of the renowned QB, the verse got plenty of airtime.
Tebow, born in the Philippines to American missionaries, is an outspoken Christian. He regularly spends his vacation time speaking at ministry events or participating in foreign mission trips. He normally promotes Philippians 4:13 in his eye black:

Google Trends, "John 3:16" was the hottest search term for a period of time after the BCS Championship Game. Plenty of college football fans must have been curious as to what the verse said. Thanks to Tebow's simple gesture, they likely came across:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.One can assume that on this biggest of stages in college football, that Tebow chose to advertise the beautiful summary of the Gospel in Chapter 3 of John. Praise God, it looks like it worked.

That's awesome - I didn't get to watch much of the game, but when I turned it on, I said "No way! He's got John 3:16 in his eye black!"
I think some people may criticize it as trite or just "cool," but I think it's an effective way to at least say "Hey, this is what I'm about. Why don't you come ask me about it?"
At first I was a little annoyed at this: to me, tossing a verse reference into the airwaves does not equate with "sharing the gospel," which I consider to be a more personal act.
But hearing about the Google trends information, I'm reconsidering. Hmm.

I was going to say, "That's very inspirational, for anyone who recognizes that it's a Scripture reference and already knows what it says." But, like @ChrisRusso@xanga, I'd not considered the possibilities of Google. Welcome to the Information Age, I guess.

Whoa, that's really amazing! This day and age it's really interesting how people are exposed to the gospel. Tim Tebow often wears Phil 4:13 on his eye blacks as well.
I think that it's important to put this into the context of the player...in this case, Tim Tebow. He is a VERY outspoken Christian. He spends his breaks in the Philippines doing evangelism, and last summer I know that he spoke to inmates at at least one prison and shared the Gospel with them. A lot of athletes could have done this (or something similar) and I would have simply rolled my eyes. Tebow doesn't just 'talk the talk', but he also 'walks the walk'. As a freshman when the Gators one the national champisionship, they were invited to the Playboy mansion. Tebow was the only player not to go, and he said that he thought it would set a bad example/mess up his witness.
I am not usually to enthralled at the actions of Gators players (I am an Ohio State alum) however, I was not aware of the Playboy story. I am thankful that Mr. Tebow took that stance. It gives his testimony credibility to stand up under national pressure to be "cool" and to be outspoken for Jesus instead.
I agree that Tebow appears to walk the walk and not just talk the talk, so I'm not questioning his heart for God, but to me (personal conviction here) it seems to cheapen the Word of God by displaying it like that. I know many will disagree with me on this.
I do know that God can work in the life of someone reading that verse on google somewhere, but we should be praying for those who have been exposed to the Word of God that God would send His children to follow up with them like He sent Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:
So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, Do you understand what you are reading? 31 And he said, How can I, unless someone guides me? . . .

Tim has all that the world has to offer within his reach, and it's admirable that he uses his notoriety to bring glory to God.
I am glad to see that people were actually checking into it. I am not convinced that this would have led to tons of people getting saved, but it is not about the many who didn't. \
It is about the few who are now rethinking some things because of what they found out.

I love the testimony of Tim Tebow, more athletes need to be like him.
