• Looking at the New Year Like Mary Tyler Moore

  I know it's old, but have you ever seen the Mary Tyler Moore show? If you haven't, I'm sure you can find it on YouTube; at the beginning credits, as the theme song is ending, she throws her hat up in the air as the singer blares out "you're gonna make it after alllllllll"

  It's cheesy, but that's how I feel at this time every year, no matter what I have going on.

  What is it about the end of the year that makes us want to reflect on time gone by?  Better yet, what is it about the New Year that makes us feel that we’re capable of starting fresh?  It’s a pretty predictable cycle…the beginning of the year; we’re revved up and ready to go.  By the summer, we’re coasting comfortably; fall brings a sense of complacency and by the time winter rolls around we’ve either totally forgotten about the goals that we made earlier or we’re already planning our resolutions for the New Year in the hopes that we’ll do better next time.

  So, in the spirit of tradition and cliché my last post for 2008 will follow this format; and the great thing about blogging is that when I forget about all this cheer and optimism come September, I can simply remind myself by coming back to this post and reading it then!

  What have I learned this year?

  A lot of disappointing things have happened, but I’m still here, which means that there is still an opportunity for change in myself, my environment and my future relationships with other people.   I have learned that not everyone who claims to love me or be my friend has my best interest at heart; and it doesn’t make me a bad person for leaving such people behind.   I have learned that I am stronger than what I thought and that there is still a lot for me to accomplish.  I have made mistakes and learned from them.  I am capable of forgiveness…no matter how hard it is or how long it takes.   I have felt the love of God and more than ever, I believe that He will always be with me.

  I don’t have any formal resolutions for 2009, really just to be a better person; but in spite of the things that have happened this year, I’m not afraid.  With God’s help, I know I can face and go through anything.

  So leaving the past behind and looking forward to the future; Happy New Year. I'm ready to toss my hat in the air!
