  • Ever Afraid of How God Will Answer Your Prayer?

    Guest post submitted by RuthViola

Though He Slay Me... Have you ever been in that place where you want to pray but you're afraid of how God will answer?

As a good Christian I know the "proper" way to pray is "your will be done," but it's not an easy thing to ask God. That's where I was this morning. I told God honestly that I couldn't pray as I should because I was afraid to trust Him. I was afraid He would take away the one thing I thought I wanted. The one thing I have waited for and longed for.

Then I remembered a conversation I had with a friend.

"Do you know that God loves you?"

    "Yes."

"Do you trust that He will do what is best for you?"

    "Yes."

    "Even if it hurts?"

    Crying. "Yes."

The words of a verse in Job came to my mind. "Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him." How could Job continue to place his trust in God when his whole life was falling apart all around him? I looked up that verse. It's in chapter 13. Job was mad at God. He didn't want to trust Him. He was questioning God, fighting Him. "Yet will I hope in him."

I began to cry as I once again surrendered my life to God's control. I knew that I had to trust God, but I'm still struggling. I'm where Job was. Asking God. Fighting. "Yet will I hope in Him."

Have you ever been afraid of how God will answer your prayers?

This is exactly where I am right now. Thanks.

    me, too.  thanks for sharing.

Yes, in fact I've had times when I've been praying and had the Holy Spirit interrupt me and ask me if I really wanted to pray a certain thing, because if I did, God would do it.  It helped me to be more aware of what I was praying.

Trust me, my friend, IF God should remove something you wanted or loved according to His will, not only would He be doing it for your best interest, but he ALWAYS, as has been my experience, replaced it with something so much more better, something WAY more than I could imagine in the way of happiness!! This is tried and proven with Him! He loves to see us under subjection to that which is "His will" even if we know or think something else may be best for us! He's like a wonderfully loving parent that never makes any mistakes in guiding us in the right direction! My very life and experiences testifies of that, :) Not sure how old you are, but one day, when you are older, you can look back and see this to be true...I promise!

How come you guys can't just practice some personal responsibility and take your lives into your own hands?

  • ajforward007

yes, i've been there...still am. i like to be in control of my own life, so this aspect of christianity is difficult for me--but i'm a good work in progress. thank you for sharing!

@coolmonkey@xanga -How come you guys can't just practice some personal responsibility and take your lives into your own hands?

It's a combination of both. Just think about it logically from a Christian's view. If God is infinitely more wise than we are, why would we not want his will in all things in our lives?

  • coolmonkey@xanga

@musterion99@xanga - What makes you think he's infinitely wiser than us?

  • musterion99@xanga

@coolmonkey@xanga - If he could create the universe and knows all things, then I would consider him wiser than us.

I had a friend in college who always joked that the one thing she would never pray for again was patience because the one time she did, she had the most frustrating day ever.  Yeah, she learned about patience, but I'm not sure she thought it was worth it.  One of my college profs and I once talked about the difficulty of praying that God would take control even of our desires, that we would learn to desire good things.  That's a huge part of your personality to surrender.

  • coolmonkey@xanga

@musterion99@xanga - Let's just assume that he did create everything (still waiting on evidence), that only implies that he is really smart.  Being smart and being wise are not the same.  My question still stands.

  • mz_d0rkabl3@xanga

@coolmonkey@xanga - its all a question of faith. Since clearly you don't believe in God there's no use arguing this point. There's no right or wrong just different beliefs and different ways of life, that's all

  • coolmonkey@xanga

@mz_d0rkabl3@xanga - I'm just saying a psychologist might be better than a Bible if you are having serious problems.  Even faith healers suggest exhausting real medicine options before they rely on the them.  Prayer kind of just patches up the holes, but it really doesn't solve the deeply rooted stuff.  I suspect most people turn to faith because they cheap out on professional help.

  • musterion99@xanga

@coolmonkey@xanga - Your question is based upon the premise and context of this post that God is the God of the bible and the bible is true. The bible declares God to be wise and full of wisdom. I think it's rather silly to even ask these questions under the premise that God does exist and in which we and the post are speaking of.

  • RuthViola@xanga

@coolmonkey@xanga - trust me, I have tried taking my life into my own hands. That never works.

  • RuthViola@xanga

@JUSTAVAPORHERE@xanga - Thank you, your comment is reassuring. I know that God's will is best, but too often I find it hard to surrender to Him.

  • JUSTAVAPORHERE@xanga

@RuthViola@xanga - Trust me, you are not alone. The hardest thing I've ever had to trust him with is my son and tithing. But it should make sense that if we trust him to take us to heaven, surely we could trust him with both of the above-mentioned issues, :). But thank you as well!

I have taken to praying that he will give me the desires of HIS heart.

    Example:

I'd been heavily bulimic for a number of years and really began to turn to God through prayer to help me get better. A year ago, while I was out on a typical run, I got hit by a Ford F-250. I was smacked in the hip and flew a few feet, landing extremely hard on the pavement. Miraculously, the only injury I sustained was a broken jaw and some busted teeth. My mouth was wired shut for over a month and it was physically impossible for me to binge and purge. That month is what saved my life. God, through an injury, healed me of my eating disorder. All the pain and suffering was for a better purpose and I am much closer to God now.

So, yes, I do get afraid sometimes of how He will answer my prayers, but eh...the outcome is always worth it.

  • lotjiujeurng@xanga

Yes. The most "dangerous" prayer would be to ask God to make you a better Christian. That's when the big ordeals begin, but in the end it is all for your own good and all for His glory.

  • goodnessgraceness@xanga

I think it's good to ask God for what we desire.  He wants us to be honest and real.  Jesus asked to be delivered from the cross if there was any other way--but he yielded to God's will, knowing (as other people have said) that God's way is always worth it.

  • Kaykalee@xanga

Yep... That's me alright... Recently, I decided to tell the guy I've cared about for the past 5 years how I felt... And just minutes before I did it, my best friend instructed me to pray, and, crying, I said "I know... I just don't know what to pray." The unknown is a terrifying thing, and I'm still learning that God does not forsake us or abandon us... No matter what.

  • The_Ecclesiates

Yes, I often find myself not knowing what to say to God in prayer...just feeling so undone and so unworthy. I am learning to accept his love for me

  • traceydockree

@coolmonkey@xanga - several years ago I suffered from depression and although I had my faith, it felt a bit like clinging to driftwood. I prayed. Just that simple "Help me" prayer. Suddenly the door opened to being healed - the interesting thing is that God often used so-called secular stuff to help unravel the garbage in my head, (He's a God of common sense!) then He really opened my eyes up to His wonderful love and that, yes, His way is the best way and that when I trust Him, it always turns out way better than I could have hoped. He constantly amazes me with how clever He is. You're right - He really is smart. But how do you define wise?
