  • How To Break Out of Blogger's Block

    marigold by miss marigold

Now that I'm relaxing at home with my family (for the first time in a year), I finally have time to blog and recover from my worst-ever exams week. Maybe I'm a little too relaxed, or maybe it's because I haven't been to my church or small group for a couple of weeks now, but I'm having a hard time thinking of anything to blog about in terms of faith. I'm curious to know how everyone, especially those who blog about their faith, go about it.

Do you force yourself to sit down and write a couple of times a week, or do you blog just when ideas strike you? Are you better at blogging during stressful times, or during relaxing times? (I tend to be better at blogging when I have a lot on a plate - Xanga's a good antidote for stress!)

Here are some things I do when I'm struck with blogger's block:
    - Look at old Facebook pictures. Of course, that may result in my looking at pictures for three hours and not blogging at all.
    - Open the prayer/QT journal. I never retype my journal entries word-for-word, as they totally lack grammar or continuity, but it helps going through old entries and seeing trends in themes or personal growth (even if it's backward growth...eek.)
    - Talk to people. Most of my entries, such as the one about women joining their man's church, de-tagging questionable Facebook pictures, or feeling out of place in the prayer circle were inspired by real conversations or discussions that had no actual resolution.

I can usually make myself blog about random things, like my new year's eve plans or how much I dislike the cold weather, at any time, but it seems that blogging about faith presents a greater challenge as I still lack the discipline to consistently keep up with my walk on a personal level, let alone on a level that requires that I write about it for dozens of readers (oh well, now I know what my New Year's resolution is.)

What do you do when you're having a hard time blogging, especially about your faith?

I'm still trying to figure that out! Usually I write most when I am upset about something, but then I usually decide not to post it because I don't want to hurt someone who might read it.

I write mostly when something strikes me...which usually leads to a blog every once in a blue moon. Alot of the times, something will be on my mind and I will sit down and try to blog and it will be a MESS! (sorta like your journal) Usually, then, I'll just delete it, sleep on it, and come back later to re-write it. Talking to people is definitely a good way to spark up a blog. Great conversations get your juices flowing :)

Me and my girls will have hours and hours of conversation about God and about life in general and alot of the times I use those convos to write a blog that I feel is worth sharing.

I never have trouble thinking of something to blog about. I always have a zillion ideas percolating in my mind. I find it frustrating at times. My problem is getting time to write about them all! And then as I'm writing about something I get led away into new things God is showing me. For me, just life and reading and prayer and worship is pretty much all I need to give me something to blog about.

I would also put a plug in for looking through old journals. I'm currently doing that right now and it brings you back to those basic themes/callings that you can easily lose sight of, the big purposes God is trying to work out in and through your life. It can really help you regain a sense of God's sovereignty and God's rule over all, especially when you find yourself in the midst of chaos and change.

And, as you said, you simply must cultivate that time alone with God and keep abiding in the Vine. John 15. Christ is our Life.

I tend to be a sporadic writer. I write better when I'm emotional but sometimes I am just thinking alot about stuff

like you, my blogs are a direct result of past or present situations. i often joke with my friends that my life could be a sitcom.  my problem is that when i get busy, i don't blog at all, so big chunks of my life don't end up on my page...maybe this year i'll be a bit more disciplined, lol

My pastor and I have committed to blogging once a week. We take turns choosing the topic - one week he'll choose, the next I'll choose. My niece joins in the group every now and then, and she'll choose the topic. By taking turns choosing topics, we are not pressured to come up with something every week on our own. It's also interesting to see what two people will write on the same topic.

Funny thing about this is that it seems that when my pastor chooses the topic I seem to have an easier time writing, and when I choose the topic I have a hard time writing.  Go figure...
