What Shapes Your World View?
by mrs violet
What is a world view? Dictionary.com defines it as- a comprehensive view of the world and life. So what shapes your world view?
Let me ask you some questions:Do you have any religious affiliations?
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?Depending on your answers, you may find that you have developed the same kind of world view that is rapidly developing amongst 18-25 year olds who have been dubbed "Generation Next".
There is nothing wrong with this view point or stance, if you are a humanist, or are humanistic in your world view. But if you are a Christian then I ask the very serious question, what/who is shaping your world view?
A survey of young people ages 18-25 by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press includes news about the growth of humanist beliefs among the so-called "Generation Next."
What/who do you believe shapes your world view?

as Christians God should shape our world view. Anything else is humanism. I just posted something talking about that.
Do you have any religious affiliations? I am a follower of Christ
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability) yes
Do you believe that humans evolved over time? NO!
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time? NO
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality? tolerance is a phrase used by many people to say you have to be ok with everything they say is ok and it used to make it that you have to be support everything except Christianity. IT is "in" to bash Christians.
Do you have any religious affiliations?
Yes! I am a Christian... and by that I mean I am a follower of Christ. I felt the need to clarify because a lot of people call themselves "Christians," but don't actually walk it out, ya know what I mean?
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
Yes, I do! I attend a church on campus at my college and when I'm home, I attend my home church. Both of them are wonderful and I really enjoy going.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
No, I do not believe in macro-evolution, which I'm assuming is what this question is referring to. However, I do believe in micro-evolution... there's no denying that people/animals/plants adapt over time.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
See the answer to the previous question...
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
Do I love the people involved? Yes! Do I agree with them? No!
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
No. I think the law should be based on what is morally correct, not on what people think should be the law. People are immoral.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
If by "becoming more spiritual," you mean, getting to know God more, then I think it's a very important goal. But, that phrase could mean a lot of things, so I'm not sure how to answer it.
Do you have any religious affiliations?
I am Catholic.
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
Yes.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
Yes.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
Yes.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
It depends on what you mean by "tolerant". Regarding immigration: if it's done legally, then great. Regarding race: racism is BS. Homosexuality: if people choose to sin, I am not going to force them otherwise. I can proclaim the gospel to them and preach by example, but coercion is not a part of the game. (I'm talking specifically about homosexuality here)
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
Again, it depends. There is a difference between a democracy and a tyranny by majority. The will of the people should influence law as much as the law allows for it, not any more or any less.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
Very important.
Do you have any religious affiliations?
Not exactly. I would consider myself agnostic with mostly taoist and Neo-Platonist influences.
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
No. Even when I considered myself a Christian, I didn't attend church regularly. I found the sermons drab, the pastors unenlightened and the whole experience stressful.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
Of course we did. Anyone who denies this is actively denying reality/facts. Delusionalism (I think I just made that word up) should not be encouraged.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
Yes.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
Yes.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
Depends on how intelligent the people are and how important the laws they're influencing are. Idiots should not rule over scholars.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
Not especially important. I already consider myself to be pretty spiritual as it is.
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)?
Not at the moment.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time? No, evolution is just a theory that can't be proven!
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time? No, however I do believe there could be life elsewhere in the universe, but not intelligent life.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality? This is a trick question! If I say no, them I'm labled intolarant! If I say yes, the I tolarate sin!
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law? Not if it contrary to what is taught in the Bible.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life? If you mean to be more like Christ, then Very!
Do you have any religious affiliations?
Yes. Catholic.
Do you attend church
regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the
purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
Yes. And I serve the church in various capacities.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time? Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
Yes. I also believe that creation was started and is guided by God.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
What a poorly-worded question. I'll put it this way. I love everyone. I think that people should adhere to the law in most cases. This does not imply that I am in favor of everyone's particular behaviors. Nor does it imply that I make a big fuss about the legality of said behaviors.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
Yes. I do not welcome our new robot overlords. ;)
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
I am already a spiritual being. You might as well ask me if I want to become more physical.
-----------------------
As an aside, there's a reason that the word "humanism" is often preceded by the word "secular". It's the easiest way to make the distinction between the Christian humanists whose thought dominated the humanist arena for many years in the West and the modern humanists who often eschew the religious worldview that was previously attached to humanism.
Do you have any religious affiliations? I'm part of a non-denominational reformation movement that identifies itself as the Church of God, the name generally given to the discipleship community in scripture.
Do
you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of
Christians for the purpose of
fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)?
I attend a local congregation, and in February my wife and I are moving into a Christian community in Ohio. Attending church twice or thrice a week is not the New Testament expectation by a longshot.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time? My views basically line up with C. S. Lewis's. Creatures evolved over time in a process guided by God but disputed by other spiritual free will agents. At some point, a point was reached where God breathed his spirit into the first human. I think that's what the mythic poetry of Genesis 1-2 generally refers to.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time? Yeah, also that.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality? This is pretty vague wording. I am all for people moving from one country to another and being various races. I am torn on what the church's attitude toward homosexuals should be specifically, but I am definitely tolerant toward Christians who have views opposing mine. To answer what I am guessing is the intent of the question, I am sympathetic with illegal aliens, and I think that serious reform is in order for U.S. policy to be enforceable, either practically or morally. I'm really not sure what is meant by race here.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law? Influence certainly, but not absolutely dictate. That is why it is important to have courts in place, among other things.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life? Not particularly. Being more Christlike is important, and being more useful is, but being more spiritual really doesn't sound very important to me.

1. Yes, it's called "Christianity."
2. Yes
3. No, we were created just like the Bible tells us in Genesis!
4. No, look above.
5. Um...those three things you listed shouldn't be in the same category! What race you are isn't something you can control, homosexuality certianly is.
6. I guess I don't understand this question....I don't think so?
7. If you mean striving to be like Christ...It's important! The most important thing!
So, who decides which of these views makes you a "humanist" and which ones do not? Which answers are right and which are wrong.?
Do you have any religious affiliations? Yes, I am Catholic.
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability) Yes.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time? Yes
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time? Yes
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality? Yes, doesn't everyone? Immigration is what built America. Racism is a sin. With respect to "homosexuality", I assume the question is regarding same sex marriage (just say that!!! This is why most surveys are entirely meaningless, the questions are framed such in a vague manner). So, define "tolerant"? It means to "tolerate". "Inclined to tolerate; especially : marked by forbearance or endurance, i.e., tolerant parents, or a culture tolerant of religious differences." Note that it says nothing about or "agreeing".
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law? Yes. Does it not now?
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life? "More" spiritual? How about I just stay as "spiritual" as I am.
Since I am 17 and a member of this "Generation Next" I will assume this is just another survey for old people to use to show how we are sending the world to hell in a handbasket with our "humanistic" beliefs. Yawn.
Do you have any religious affiliations?
i am Christian, although not very proudly as of late.
Do you attend church
regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the
purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
no, i am against organized religion. it's man-made and does not properly reflect God.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
yup. as an archaeology student, it's hard to look at bones of Homo Erectus and NOT believe that.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
yup. again, it seems obvious.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
yes. God made us who we are. condemning such things as race and sexual orientation is a rejection of God's creation.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
doesn't it already?
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
it's fairly important... but right now, i have other things to worry about. i'm not going to graduate college because i pray.
Do you have any religious affiliations? No. I am agnostic.
Do you attend church
regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the
purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability) No. I haven't been in a church in over two years. I was, however, forced to go to church until I was 16 because my mother wanted me to have a "well-rounded education". The hypocrisy I saw in people was very off-putting.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time? Yes.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time? Yes.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality? I consider myself a very accepting person. I don't necessarily like the word "tolerant" because it implies to me that there is something wrong that I am merely putting up with.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law? Of course.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life? If by "becoming more spiritual" you mean "becoming more religious", then not at all. If you mean it as gaining a better understanding of myself and the world around me (societal, interpersonal, and natural), then it's the most important thing in my life.
If the additional information helps: I am 19. I am a college student. I consider myself a moderate with socialist leanings, but a humanist at the heart of the matter. I believe in loving all things.
And EVERYTHING shapes my worldview. Everything I have ever experienced. Because if you don't reevaluate your beliefs when you receive conflicting evidence, then you can't have an honest opinion.
@Kristenmomof3@xanga - A christians worldview is not formed by christ. It like everyone elses is formed by our experiences and our thoughts and our logic. Im taking Christian Worldview Seminar taught by my dad at my HS so this isnt coming out of nowhere.
@jupiter312@xanga - It would be great if that philosophy worked. I would love to believe that we should love everyone but its simply not practical it will never happen if humanity is left to its own devices. There will always be people with a need for power who will do evil for evils sake.
@too_pretty_to_die@xanga - SO what youre saying is that youre not a christian....
@jhaguar13@xanga - No, I know that it doesn't work for everyone. It doesn't even work for most people. There is a lot of greed, and a lot of hate, and a lot of exploitation. Hell, I can't even live by it; I'm nowhere near perfect. But I can believe in it, and I can strive for it.
My answers... I found some of these questions to be pretty interesting and thought-provoking... thanks!
Do you have any religious affiliations?
Yes, I'm Christian. I was baptized Anglican, but that's because that's the affiliation that was available at the time (born in a country were Christianity isn't supposed to exist).
Do you
attend church regularly?
The Church of Revelife. Lately, that's as close to fellowship as I get.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
Most definitely. Look at how much we've changed in the last 100 years alone. Evolution doesn't just mean physical. It can be mental and technological, too, IMHO.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
Definitely. If Humans can do it, why can't others? I believe God made all creatures with the inherent ability to better themselves. Natural selection - it's why a weaker animal will probably die in the wild, while it's stronger siblings will grow up, and the stronger, faster siblings won't be eaten and will reproduce. :)
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
Immigration? Race? Are these even supposed to be issues in Christianity? We're all brothers, and everyone has the right to look for a better life. Homosexuality is none of my business - It's not my choice, but I won't judge others for choosing it. The Lord said that it is not our place to judge, lest we shall be judged.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
The will of the people created law...Unless you mean God's laws.. in which case, no.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
Very. Very, very, very. That said, I'm very bad at it. (So I'm canning the attitude right now :P )
@jhaguar13@xanga - *shrug* if thinking i'm not Christian helps you out in some way, go for it :)
The reason why people in the age group tend to have an anti-Christian worldview is that 1) they simply haven't been taught what the Bible says and 2) they've been both overtly and covertly taught that the Bible isn't reliable and isn't true.
Do you have any religious affiliations? Yes, Baptist.
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability) Yes, when I'm physically able.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time? No, sometimes I even wonder if we're not going a little downhill, so to speak :)
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time? No in a macroevolution sense (be careful to define "evolve"- it means different things to different people). Animals certainly do change to fit their environments better, however (adaptation)- hey, I'm a goat-herder, I see the effects of selective breeding every day. The ability for a species to change is one of the great works of God....but that doesn't make it a completely different species.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality? Once again, define your terms carefully. What does "tolerant" mean? God calls us to love others, and (in the Old Testament) especially warned the Jews to be considerate of the "strangers in the land." Where we live, immigrants honestly are doing the jobs that no one else WILL do...I say get those people a social security number and let them work and start paying taxes like other Americans....but I digress and don't want to get into politics. Race isn't an issue; people are people; but culture can be more or less Christian in worldview and practice. Homosexuality is a PRACTICE that's condemned by the Bible, just like adultery and fornication. Being tempted to commit a homosexual act is just that...being tempted. We're all tempted, and we all have to pray, struggle and sometimes even fast to overcome our "old nature."
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law? It depends on whether the will of the people or the "law" is in agreement or conflict with the Law of God. The Law of God comes first.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life? Very important; it's the most important thing in my life.
Do you have any religious affiliations?
I am a Christian, and attend a Church of God congregation.
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
Yep - we have worship and Sunday School on Sundays, and then Bible study/youth group/children's group on Wednesday nights.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
@point_of_no_R3turn@xanga - I think you put it best. I believe that all things better themselves and adapt over time, but I believe what the Bible tells me about creation.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
See above.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
I'm not really sure what is being asked here, but: I have no problem with immigration if it's done through the proper channels. I have no problem with race whatsoever... not sure why it's even included. As far as homosexuality: I think the lifestyle is a sin, but that doesn't mean I cannot be friends with and care about those who choose it.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
This is a hard one. Like others have said, I think it should to a certain extent, otherwise it would be a tyranny of sorts. However, people in general aren't always the 'brightest bulbs in the pack'... :)
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
Becoming more like Christ is very important to me.
@kirstenh04@xanga - Thanks! When you replied to my comment, I was like "dang, what did I do this time?" But then it was a nice comment, so it's okay. Haha, I'm so used to people arguing on Revelife, I was scared. lol
@point_of_no_R3turn@xanga - *lol* I don't blame you! There does seem to be a lot of arguing here at times! When I saw I had a reply to my comment, I had the same fear! :)
Do you have any religious affiliations?
No.
Do you attend church
regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the
purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
No. And the way that question is worded assumes that everyone answering will either be a Christian or a lapsed Christian. "Do you attend a place of worship regularly?" would have been more inclusive.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
Yes. And we're still evolving. We can see it on a societal level. We're not the same as we were even 100 years ago. (I know you were probably talking about physical evolution. Yes, I believe in that, too.)
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
Yes.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
Yes.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
It can influence it, but it shouldn't dictate it. In some places, people can be intolerant, racist, bigoted, and ignorant. Do we really want them deciding everyone else's fate?
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
I'm already pretty spiritual. But spirituality is important to me.
I identify as a Christ-follower, and what I mean by that is that for all practical purposes I'm trying to apprentice myself to Christ.
Do you attend church regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
Yes.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
I'm kind of indifferent to the big evolution/creation war. I think Christians are making way too big a deal about it. I believe God created the world, but God certainly didn't ask my opinion on the best way to do so, and I know for a fact that none of us were there.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
Microevolution at least is well-documented as fact, and crazy people who fight even the concept of that just because it has the word "evolution" in it do more harm than good to their own cause.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
Yes. Hahaha as a matter of fact, my mother just accused me of being "very tolerant" (it wasn't meant as a compliment) and I was glad to hear it.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
By the people, for the people. To clarify, for the common good. But the will of the majority should not control the treatment of minorities.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
My spirituality is the driving force of my life. I think it would be easier to let it subside a bit, it would be more convenient to become less opinionated and care less about world events and philosophical issues. I would certainly fit in better in my family, at church..But to do so would be dishonest and wrong. In the end, my parents won't be the ones responsible for the life I live, and I can't live my entire life in a "safe" little box the way they want me to if I'm convicted that I need to do otherwise. So anyway, it's a very long answer to a very short question, but in spite of pressure from pretty much everyone I know to just go with the flow (interesting, coming from the church people..) I have to say no and honestly pursue God and spirituality. Even if the people around me don't understand it.
Do you have any religious affiliations? No.
Do you attend church
regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the
purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability) No. The only time I go to mass is in school because it's Catholic and I'm not given a choice, really.
Do you believe that humans evolved over time? YES.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time? YES.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality? YES YES YES YES! (As for immigration, it depends on the situation, of course. Legal is good. But in general, yes.)
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law? Not really.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life? It's not important at all.
So basically my view of the world has nothing to do with Religion and that's fine with me. I like it that way.
Do you have any religious affiliations?
Catholic.
Do you attend church
regularly? (and by church I mean with a body of Christians for the
purpose of fellowship/teaching/exhortation/accountability)
not since my grandmother died
Do you believe that humans evolved over time?
yes. humans would have had to change in order to survive the changes that constantly occur on this planet.
Do you believe that other living things evolved over time?
yup.
Do you believe yourself to be tolerant of social issues such as immigration, race and homosexuality?
immigration is an issue of invisible lines. god created us in his image without differences this would be a very boring planet and life.
Do you believe the will of the people should influence law?
yes. god depended on flawed humans to write his word....could be mistakes there though god is perfect...we must keep adapting and we should have some say in what governs us.
How important is "becoming more spiritual" in your life?
spirituality tends to mean more to me than being religious. the church...the organization that is...tends to push me away. i stick to the books and with the brain and free will god gave me try my best to follow his example.
