I like this concept. The problem is getting people to understand it.

I don't celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, just a time to spend with family. But I really like this video and I want to share it with others. Thanks for posting.

I personally don't like the push to buy, buy, buy. But what are you going to do when someone gives you a present? Tell them that your gift to them is clean water for people they don't know, a redeemable coupon for more time with you? Great ideas, but a gift certificate is good too.

Spending isn't so bad. It helps the economy. It provides people with jobs. It loosens up the purse strings, spurs you to give when you'd rather not, gets you thinking about what people mean to you, about who they are and what they like, and how you can translate this into a meaningful gift. I think that we can give to charity while still enjoying the gift giving aspect of Christmas...Scrooge did it!

Y'all should go to the original poster's site and recommend it from there intead of rec'ing this bot-site that will spam all of your readers with friend requests when they click the link!

P.S.  I already posted this on my site last week (because I saw it on several other sites).  Nice featuring of "original" content

  • jmgbme@xanga

I saw this the other day. Good idea. I'm already spending less for Christmas because of finances this year anyway. I donated to my local homeless shelter, but I like the water idea, too. I kinda wish I had more money so I could give a little to that also.

@radicalramblings@xanga - Hi there! We think it's great you're down with the Advent Conspiracy too. You're right we've also seen a lot of folks posting the video, including our writers, but we are glad to get the word out to as many as possible. =)

  • radicalramblings@xanga

@revelife - No acknowledgment of your spambot tendencies, eh?

  • Theophilus166@xanga

@radicalramblings@xanga - Yeah, this has been going on for awhile now. You can just go to adventconspiracy.org.  I don't think they mind that people are taking their video and idea and putting it all over the web.  I think that's the point.

  • haemina@xanga

i really hope so. i'm only getting a gift for my 5 year old nephew (b/c c'mon it would suck to be a kid and not get gifts), but no gifts for other friends/family. they understand that that's not what christmas is about. i will however, be drinking lots of cider and wine and feasting whenever possible :P

  • radicalramblings@xanga

@Theophilus166@xanga - I know they don't mind.  What irks me is Xanga including it on a spambot site that people are going to unwittingly visit when it gets mindlessly rec'd all over the place.  These -ish sites of Xanga, have some type of auto-friend thing on them.  If you dare to visit, it friend-requests you.  If you approve all your friend requests without looking at them, as some folks do, you'll find your universal inbox full of every single update and post from the ish-bot sites.

  • trulytaken@xanga

@radicalramblings@xanga - It's a YOUTUBE video... not a xanga hosted video! Not sure at all what you're freaked out about. I've watched this video on YouTube several time from several different posters and no problems. No spam. No "ish" stuff (whatever that is).

  • hubbaduh@xanga

Some of us have already been doing this for years actually.

  • Theophilus166@xanga

@radicalramblings@xanga - Isn't it a link to youtube?  I'm not following you here.

  • radicalramblings@xanga

@trulytaken@xanga - @Theophilus166@xanga - Have you looked at the site you are on lately?  REVELIFE.  One of Xanga's "sister sites."  I'm not talking about the video at all.  I'm talking about THIS SITE.  This particular post was made by "mrsviolet" and was FEATURED on REVELIFE by XANGA.

  • trulytaken@xanga

@radicalramblings@xanga -  I still don't get your point. I've been subscribed to Revelife for months now and I don't get spam or "ish". I've gotten a couple of new friends through some comments I've made but I don't understand AT ALL what you are talking about. The video was made by adventconspriacy.org; I get that. But adding it to your site from YouTube (or anyone elses link from YouTube) is still the same video and doesn't allow more Xanga users to access your site or add you as a friend. That doesn't make any sense. I'm sorry but you are either very mis-informed or so vague we can't understand what you are talking about. It's a great video. I think it is totally appropreate for "Mrs. Violet" to share it in the manner in which she did and I'm thrilled Xanga chose to FEATURE it. Reading or commenting on "Featured Content" isn't dangerous. It just brings more attention to certain posts. If you don't want to be seen on Xanga enable Friends Lock or switch to a different blog hosting service. Otherwise, yeah, you may get invites from people you don't want to know. It happens. IT'S A PUBLIC SITE!

  • eugenia@xanga

This video really shocked and touched me! It really gives you some perspective. *sigh*

  • Theophilus166@xanga

@radicalramblings@xanga - If you respond to a blog featured on one of the "ish" sites, it requests that you join the blogring.  If you don't want to, you click 'no.'  If you click 'yes' and find you no longer want to be part of it, you go to your subscriptions and remove it.  It's not brain surgery.  If you can't figure it out, maybe you should take a break from the internet for awhile.

  • trulytaken@xanga

@radicalramblings@xanga - Are you saying you have a problem with REVELIFE itself? That it invites you to subscribe if you visit? All Xanga sites are that way now. If you click yes, then yeah, you get updates when Revelife updates; just like any other site you are subscribed to. But I don't get mass friend invites from hundreds of users or messages flooding my inbox from who knows who. I don't think Revelife has ever sent me a message of any kind through Xanga messages. Please be more clear about what you are worried about and why you chose this post to freak out about it....

  • radicalramblings@xanga

@trulytaken@xanga - No, I'm not talking about the pop-up box.  I'm talking about the friend invite that appears in my universal inbox within a few hours after visiting Revelife (or any of the other sister-sites).  And yes, if you do accept it, your inbox is full of all of the updates that are "featured" on revelife (or whatever sister site). The only "freaking out" I'm doing is wondering why certain users are intentionally pretending to be too stupid to understand what my comment said in the first place.

  • radicalramblings@xanga

@Theophilus166@xanga - Hahahaha take your own advice lately?  You're the one who picked a random comment to attack for no reason.  They do it to me EVERY SINGLE TIME I comment on one of these blogs, you would think they'd have a little common sense to not re-invite the same person over and over if they have said no once.

  • Lil_Firefly_25@xanga

Buying is good, but to be honest, more people will probably be spending less this year because the economy isn't so hot. Ever since a few years ago, I've never really wanted anything for Birthday/Christmas because I don't need anything. If I need something, I ask for it. This year I asked for a new pair of glasses and a new pair of boots. What irks me is my dad asking for a page-long list of things I want so Grandma and Grandpa can get me things, but I really don't want anything.

  • thepurpleporpoise

Yep. My family did it last year and we are doing it again this year. We've even gotten our churches (my family lives in a different town than me) to be involved in it too.

  • JesusIsMyBFFAE@xanga

Our church is encouraging everyone to do it. Part of our sermon last week was over this.

My college pastor and his family are doing it- and through doing it, they blessed me and gave me money for my mission trip to africa.

i DO believe we CAN do it.

  • Stephanie_J_B@xanga
  • mrsviolet

@eugenia@xanga - I agree. It has impacted the life of our family so much that instead of a planned snow holiday OS for Christmas, we are staying home.

The children ultimately made that decision.

I still shake my head at the held within.
