  • Is It OK for Christians to Ask If Doing Things is OK?

In the comments of my post "The UFC and MMA: Is It OK for Christians to Watch?", Theophilus166 said:

I read entirely too many posts entitled "Is it OK for Christians to..."  For probably 95% of these questions, my response is "listen to the Spirit." ... We traded in the old covenant, and in return we just want a new list of do's and don'ts. (entire comment)

Great point, and I've posted several "Is It OK..." questions (and please forgive my goofy title  ).  I don't regret posting them as I think they've allowed for some good discussion.  In my own life, I like to examine why I do the things that I do.  Admittedly, there are areas in my life which I would rather leave uncovered, which is all the more reason to question them.

I agree with Theophilus166.  The constant questioning whether something is OK can lead to legalism – living a life governed solely by a set of rules and leaving no room for the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit.  He says instead of questioning, the best thing is to listen to the Spirit.  I'm all for it!

However, this is where it breaks down for me: I unfortunately don't hear the Spirit leading in many of these situations. My flesh can have such a stranglehold that it outmuscles the gentle leading of the Spirit.  I think that free will is such a powerful gift that God's guidance is a clear signal, but is often clouded by my selfish desires.

And He doesn't force Himself upon me.  If I am pursuing my Lord, His words are clear.  If I'm facing away from Him, He doesn't exactly grab me by the shoulder and spin me around.  He beckons and He calls.  And it's during the times when I stop and question what I'm doing when I realize that I'm doing things for the wrong reason.  Does this mean I'm less spiritual or in-tune with God because things work this way with me?  Maybe so, but I hope not.

I do feel guidance and conviction in some situations, but usually those circumstances are well-defined, like "I could take this and no one would know..." or "I can say this behind someone's back to make myself look good."  The questioning comes out for more everyday fare – things that become routine and I just come to accept that they're OK.

How often and in what situations do you feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit?
