The UFC and MMA: Is It OK for Christians to Watch?",

Great point, and I've posted several "Is It OK..." questions (and please forgive my goofy title

). I don't regret posting them as I think they've allowed for some good discussion. In my own life, I like to examine why I do the things that I do. Admittedly, there are areas in my life which I would rather leave uncovered, which is all the more reason to question them.
I agree with Theophilus166. The constant questioning whether something is OK can lead to legalism – living a life governed solely by a set of rules and leaving no room for the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit. He says instead of questioning, the best thing is to listen to the Spirit. I'm all for it!
However, this is where it breaks down for me: I unfortunately don't hear the Spirit leading in many of these situations.
My flesh can have such a stranglehold that it outmuscles the gentle leading of the Spirit. I think that free will is such a powerful gift that God's guidance is a clear signal, but is often clouded by my selfish desires.
And He doesn't force Himself upon me. If I am pursuing my Lord, His words are clear. If I'm facing away from Him, He doesn't exactly grab me by the shoulder and spin me around. He beckons and He calls. And it's during the times when I stop and question what I'm doing when I realize that I'm doing things for the wrong reason. Does this mean I'm less spiritual or in-tune with God because things work this way with me? Maybe so, but I hope not.
I do feel guidance and conviction in some situations, but usually those circumstances are well-defined, like "I could take this and no one would know..." or "I can say this behind someone's back to make myself look good." The questioning comes out for more everyday fare – things that become routine and I just come to accept that they're OK.
How often and in what situations do you feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit?

I think what is up with most Christians is that we 95% of the times know what is the right thing to do because our conscious or perhaps the Holy Spirit leads us in the right direction and we can also validate it with the Bible Scripture. However, most of us wants to hear something else and 9 out of 10 times, it is going to be against the Bible. We only want to hear what we want to hear so that is why we tend to ask the question, "is it ok to do whatever it is?:
I "trust my gut" when I can't find NT scripture to lead me, but there are sooo many that can and do.
There is one scripture that is pretty good: Philippians 4:8 "And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."
And then I ask myself sometimes if what I want to do, is something I would do if Jesus were joining me. After all....he always IS there.
Finally, I don't think it's wrong to ask. Accountability is part of what helps us learn from others. Both by keeping ourselves accountable and by helping others be accountable. When I had asked one woman to be MY accountability partner, she told me that it ended up teaching her way more than she thought she'd even teach me. She was a Missionary wife, in her 60's too!
I agree, I think it is a good thing to ask and get other's opinions when we don't know if something is okay to do or not...there are always people who have gone through similar situations as we have and can advise is through their experiences!
IMO, the fact that we are thinking about these things (whether or not it's ok), discussing them and trying to find what God wants of us, is kind of a real clue that we ARE seeking to do what God wants of us...
I feel as though you do often. Like, for instance, with my son and the constant grief he brings on me and the trouble he gets into, seems all I do is yell and fuss at him anymore, :( I told someone the other day even that living a Christian life in this situation is impossible, although I REALLY know it's not, but is sure is hard at least. But in that situation, it's become so routine for me to yell and fuss that I don't feel the conviction like I do in other rare situations that are not repetitive in nature. But in some situations, like for instance when someone offended me the other day. I was telling a friend in a chat room that sometimes I feel like I come across as arrogant, even though I truly do not seem to (FYI: This was a friend that when I had made a statement about cheating partners a week or so ago and how I really felt they never changed, but rather were only sorry because they got caught) did not like my opinion and ignored me for a few days after that. Well, the other day when I mentioned the arrogance issue, she was quick to agree with me, which totally threw me off, so I told her that I could see the conversation between her and I was about to head south and so we should end it. We did and I told everyone bye. I did this because I knew to stay would end up in big-time sin via my mouth, but I left because the nudge was there that told me if I stayed, I'd stumble. And if you knew how outspoken I am, you would know how hard I am tempted to speak my mind, lol, but as I said I left.
But, I, too, I find it amazing that in a rare situation as the latter above, I hear Him, but when in the repetitive situation, as with my son above, I don't. Maybe it's because there is never a break to hear His voice admist the constant drama. That would be my guess...that or because it's become such a natural part of my day, it seems normal to me, lol.

Absolutely! We are supposed to help each other in our walk with Christ!
generally, feeling guilty means i need to examine what i'm doing. my conscience has always been in hyper-drive, so usually that's all i need.
i just don't see how some of the questions can't be answered with just a little common sense. divine revelation should NOT be necessary for you to decide whether to get back with an ex who cheated on you. why would your decision be any different because you're Christian?
We didn't "trade in the old covenant."
The comment that refers to "if I can't find an NT scripture ..." well, why not go back to the OT?
Too many Christians act now as if the Old Testament is irrelevant, but Christ did not come to abolish or "trade in" the "old covenant," or to establish a "new" one. He came to fulfill the old one.
It seems to me that Christ came and revealed the true purpose of some of the "law," which included tearing down some of the old "rules."
But that doesn't nullify the law, or the Old Testament. I just get sick of Christians only taking half the counsel of God.
@icicle84@xanga - Thanks for your comment. I was also going to mention that we don't discard the OT re: what @IMChurchmouse@xanga wrote. (See Romans 15:4; I Cor. 10:11; II Tim 3:16-17. All Scripture. - Without the OT, you can't really understand the NT.)
I liked @yet_still_learning@xanga's comment that we usually know what's right but we balk at it and try to squirm out of doing what we already know what is right to do.
There are certain things that are clear-cut in Scripture but there are others which aren't. For things in the latter category (those gray areas) Christians can differ and agree to disagree for it depends on personal conscience/conviction. What is sin to one person may not be sin to another. In that case as we decide we need to ask if we might be a stumbling block to others and then not to judge those who differ from us on those non-essentials. James tells us that whoever knows the right thing and doesn't do it, to him it is sin.
@naphtali_deer@xanga - well said, well said.
@naphtali_deer@xanga - Thank you for seeing it in my light. :)
@icicle84@xanga - @naphtali_deer@xanga - We don't discard the Old Testament - but we must understand that we are under absolutely zero obligation to obey it. I wrestled with the question "how much of the Old Testament is a Christian required to obey?" But when I did an in-depth study on Galatians, it was clear to me. None of it. We're under a New Covenant, and that new covenant actually requires much more of us than the old.
Take a few things Paul says in Galatians:
3:10 "For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them."
Paul is quoting Deuteronomy 27:26, and he actually adds the word "all" to his quotation. His point is this: if you're going to obey the law, you better choose to obey all of it. Jews didn't separate the law into moral, civil, and ceremonial categories as some Christians try to do today. It was an all-or-nothing thing. Paul is saying we're welcome to obey the law for our righteousness - but we better obey every law.
Also read the end of chapter 3. Paul compares the law to a tutor, which was valuable for a time, but now that faith has come, "we are no longer under a tutor." If I told you I had a math tutor when I was in third grade because I was struggling with multiplication, that wouldn't be so strange. But what if I told you that at age 27, I still meet with that tutor so I can work on my multiplication? That would be odd. That's how it is with the law. It was very valuable. But it has served it's purpose. We are done with the law. The law of Christ, "be perfect, as your father in heaven is perfect" is much higher, and much more difficult to follow.
Often the argument I hear is "if we're not bound to the law, that means we can do whatever we want. It will be anarchy, and the result will be cheap grace." Not at all. We don't abandon the Old Covenant for nothing, we abandon it for the example of Jesus. Following the Old Covenant is the easy way out.
And let us be reminded that God's promise to Abraham existed 400 years before the law of Moses. Not to mention, Abraham fell asleep while they "signed the deal" (Genesis 15, which is what Paul is talking about in Galatians 3:15-18). The promise existed for the Old Covenant. The Old Covenant (the law) has come and gone, while the promise has been fulfilled in Christ.
@Theophilus166@xanga - I'll also point out that I think conversation about issues like these are good, and I think the Spirit uses those conversations to convict us. I'm just hesitant to set absolute rules in place when scripture doesn't clearly justify those rules.
@Theophilus166@xanga - reply coming, not sure when, though.
@Theophilus166@xanga - When I spoke of not discarding the OT, I did not mean to imply that we go back to the law and put ourselves under the law, which now I see some may have thought. I was speaking of our not neglecting the teaching of the OT, there are plenty of examples for us to follow, as well as examples to avoid, as well as to say God's great plan of salvation by faith running through the entire Word of God. You see all kinds of references all over the NT from the OT and the symbolism and types in the OT pointing to the person and work of Christ in the NT. We really limit ourselves if we stick with the NT or "Jesus only." You can't really do that. That's what I meant by not discarding the OT. We can't understand Jesus apart from the whole Word of God.
It is true we are no longer under law but under grace. The sinless Christ became sin for us, became a curse for us, so we might be saved through faith in Him. He kept the law perfectly and His perfect righteousness is imputed to us, counted to us, by faith.
You wrote: The law of Christ, "be perfect, as your father in heaven is perfect" is much higher, and much more difficult to follow...We don't abandon the Old Covenant for nothing, we abandon it for the example of Jesus.
The law of Christ is impossible apart from Christ's Spirit being imparted to us so we might live a righteous life. (Gal. 3:14: so we might receive the promised Spirit by faith).
Not only is Christ's righteousness imputed to us by faith so we might be counted righteous but Christ's nature is imparted to us by faith to regenerate us into new creations with not only a desire but an ability to live a holy live, to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect. Redemption involves both our justification (being counted righteous) and our sanctification (being made righteous).
I'm wondering what you meant when you said "we abandon it [the Old Covenant] for the example of Jesus." I guess I'd like you to clarify what you mean by that.
If you mean by the example of Jesus being this: that Jesus lived a holy and perfect life through the Spirit of God indwelling Him, then I agree with you, i.e.-we can live that same holy and perfect life only as Christ's Spirit dwells in us.
But if you say: Jesus was our example and we strive to follow Him as a good moral example, I disagree because in ourselves we have no power to live a holy and perfect life apart from the Spirit of God who dwells in us.
You also wrote "the promise has been fulfilled in Christ," which is true, but it is still being worked out in time as we live each day by the power of the Holy Spirit, in that way the promise is still being worked out in our lives. "The life we live in the flesh we live by faith in the Son of God." Galatians 2:20b. Philippians 2:12-13. We work out the salvation that God has worked in us. It is not a one-time event, but a process, although in God's eyes already complete (see Romans 8:30).
