Guest post by Tammy HodgeA few days ago I had someone tell me I was great at quoting scripture but not good at living it. It got me thinking – that statement is half-true. I am terrible at living God's word. I know that! And I won’t deny it and tell you I’ve arrived.
But I’m not great at quoting scripture. At all.
I read my Bible all the time. I’m involved in studies. I talk about the Word with my husband, my kids, my family, you. But as far as retention? I can’t remember addresses. I know parts and passages and yes… I do know plenty of scripture, but not as much as I would like! It's always been a struggle for me.
How do you best memorize scripture? Do you have a routine, a process... ?

recently I had a boss who talked alot about our home life and work life being the same. I know that I try not to talk at all about my spiritual life so that I can work harder on living it. I believe that I try to walk by the ethics of Christ. I am sure that I don't always get it right, though I don't believe that being judged is very helpful. How can you know your brother's heart?
Start with well known ones and memorize like at school rereading and reciting over and over.
I would recommend to write it down on a note card and just read it over repetively until it is memorized. But what is more important is not just memorizing the scriptures, but it's applying the scriptures to the daily living, that makes all the difference.
I was in church at 9 for about 6 months and they just stuck with me. But on the other hand, while I can quote them, I cannot tell you where in the Bible most are found, lol. The main thing is that we don't just profess, we practice a Christian life. I heard a saying once that goes like this...People do not need to hear a sermon, they need to see one, :)
Take care,
Cheryl
TMS works wonders for me
i read them out loud to myself and then i write them out.
As annoying as they can be, songs geared toward memorizing work best for me. You might already know a ton of verses already from Sunday school songs, even hymns. But if you want the full effect, you can purchase CDs (usually for kids) that have the verse and the reference in an annoyingly catchy sort of way. They get stuck in your head, and that's what works.
Alternatively, if you're a musical kind of person, you can put them to your own tunes (or recycle other songs). Good luck!
Write down the first letter of every word. I.E.
John 3:16 FGSLTWTHGHOBSTWBIHWNPBHEL.
Then read it over and over. It works, really!
It's hard for me too, to put the reference with the verse! That's something I struggle with too! I'm a visual person, so when I memorize something, I have it on a card or something and I write it out, and then say it to myself over and over again. When I get it memorized, I can picture the words of the verse, and that's how I usually memorize best.
I use notecards too, but keep them with me. That way when I am waiting in a line or finish my lunch a little early I can take them out and read them over. This is also a great way to open doors for people to ask you about the verse!
I love memorizing Bible verses and I have found the easiest way to do it is have the verse p around me wherever I go. I designed this product that has helped me and is helping many others - it is basically a stickable Scripture. check it out! http://www.scripturestickies.com
I've been using www.memverse.com for a few weeks now and it has been helping me tremendously. I really like not having to write out my memory verses on a 6x4 card! It also does a great job of scheduling the review so that you don't spend a lot of time on verses you know. They have a pretty cool list of the most popular memory verses if you're looking for ideas. Habakkuk anyone? :)
