  • Does Daylight Savings Time Make You Miss Church?

    palm by mr palm

This announcement probably has been pummeled into your brain by now: Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour tonight for Daylight Savings Time!  For many people, this has a minor effect on their sleep habits that they'll adapt to in a couple of days.  However, for church-going folk, this may make them to miss a deeply moving worship experience and rock-solid Biblical instruction (results may vary from church-to-church).

Churches I've attended always made this announcement the week before.  And of course, the Sunday after a Daylight Savings Time change, the pastor HAS to make a joke about people sleeping in or showing up an hour early.  I think those jokes are required in seminary curriculum, but I could be wrong.

We're usually pretty good at setting our clocks before we go to bed.  So, any church-missing has been a direct result of laziness, not having the time wrong.  What about you?

Have you missed church because of not setting your clock for Daylight Savings?  How about showing up an hour early?

I don't think that's every happend to me. My family's always on point about DST. But I've watched other families walk in 1 hour late. That's always amusing. Hehe.

I've never had a problem (so far) with Daylight Savings Time and church.

  • Kristenmomof3@xanga

    nope. Never had a problem

  • nicolevw@xanga

we did that twice in one year .......stupid eh?   Came to church an hour early once - doggone it missed that extra hour of sleep!~ - and came to chuch an hour late --- we didn't actually go in, we just drove by when we realized our mistake!     But - that was at least - oh 10 years ago, and we've NEVER done that again!

  • TH1SL1F3@xanga

nope... never. When I worked for the church, it would've been a nightmare to be late, considering I'm the one who ran sound!

HAHAHAHA SO true about the pastors HAVING to make a lame joke about it. That's awesome.

The first time my soon-to-be husband was taking me to church (before I became a Christian) was the Sunday when we turned the clocks back. So I was up and ready wondering why he wasn't showing up to pick me up since he's always very prompt about things....Then I opened up my newspaper and realized why he wasn't there yet...

  • tirani24@xanga

nope. i always make sure i set my clock

  • mashimaroboi@xanga

i've personally never done it, but i've seen people do it.

  • Biblerapture@xanga

I've been an hour early at times AND an hour late at times.  Whoops!  I'm glad this post reminded me, becuase I probably would have made the same mistake tomorrow morning.

  • jmallory@xanga

No... the church makes me miss church.

My  husband plays drums for the worship team and already has to be there very early. One time we forgot and he was an hour early for practice. He was locked out, and since we live 45 minutes away we couldn't go home. lol. He hasn't done that since.

Last week we got a phone call at ten o'clock from my aunt.

Aunt: Hi (sounding not so happy)

    Ma: Hi!

    Aunt: What's going on?

    Ma: Huh?

Aunt: Has there been an announcement or something and we didn't get the message

Ma: (looks puzzled) what are you talking about?

    Aunt: Where are you?

    Ma: At home.

Aunt: (sounding very confused) Are you not coming to church this morning?

    Ma: Um..yes.

    Aunt: So you're running late?

Ma: No, it's only ten o'clock

Aunt: (silence...followed by more silence..the realization dawns....embarrassed silence..to her husband) The clocks went back an hour this morning!!

    Ma: (bursts into laughter)

So yeah, not happened to us, I love my extra hour sleep so make sure my clocks are all in ticking order and alarms are set correctly.  I know we shouldn't laugh at others, but it is hilarious at times when people forget, despite the amount of reminders around them.  Usually the news, the papers and people generally remind each other on on the saturday but I think people can be so caught up with stuff, or like my aunt, a little madcap! that it just slips entirely out of the minds.  Then again, you'd think between the two of them she or the huby would have remembered.

  • Purplemoon3@xanga

yeah not that i member ..if i don't get off xanga i might be ...lol but i did not get a lot of sleep last night mabey it ahs to do with the time change...i kept waken up so i saked GOD if he wanted me to pray for something or if i was suppose to be  holding up others in prayer..still after i prayed i kept on wakn up.. mabey its case the cowboys play today or its my friend's b-day today...or that i can't believe that i've been on crutches for over a yr.

    thanks great post

  • moshimeow@xanga

Nope, I set the clock the night before... so, I make it to church.

  • FireProof451@xanga

mmm I dont think so... I was reminded via email last night, because I have to be there an hour early...

but thats why I use my cell phone for an alarm anyway

  • hrlmercygirl@xanga

well... daylight savings gave us an extra hour this year, so if anything, you should have been there early...
but my husband was pretty convinced that LAST week was daylight savings, so we almost missed church THEN.  That would've been a pretty funny story.
"Why were you an hour late today?"
"Oh, my husband thought it was daylight savings."

I have known people who have shown up an hour early and thought the services were canceled for the morning.  I always had more problems with remembering when different services began.  There was many a time when I was in college where I would get times confused for the different evening services.  I once showed up right as the sermon was being concluded.

I'm always there at the wrong time so it doesn't make much difference for me....
