QOTD: Special Place You Go to Think or Find Peace?

There's something so peaceful and soothing about sitting at the mighty Ohio River.  I sit there and watch for hours sometimes.

I see how something as insignificant as a barge drifting down the center of the water creates such huge waves on the shoreline.  Something common and seemingly unimportant affects so much.  Isn't it that way in life?  The things that seem so ordinary and plain can be important and life changing to the people directly affected by the event.  Sometimes it's there that I hear most clearly from God.  Whether it be a whisper He sends in the wind, or the reassuring conversation with a friend.  Maybe it's that connection that draws me there so often in times of turmoil.

I know that as time goes by I'll continue going down to the river, sitting on the bank and processing the major events in my life.  It doesn't make things better.  It doesn't even help me to make sense of it all.  I find that my heart is more open to the truthful, yet sometimes painful conversation that I tend to avoid in other surroundings.  I share a little more of my heart and my head.  I'm sure it doesn't make sense,  but even for a moment it gives me a taste of the peace I'm craving.

Where do you go to find peace and quiet?

When I'm in Michigan, I go to Lake Michigan and just sit and listen to the waves and watch the boats on a nice day.

In Ohio...I just found a really pretty nature preserve yesterday, so maybe there.

i have another room in my house... but peace and quiet for me is more state of being than an actual location...

lately i've been just laying in bed withdrawing from troubles I've faced throughout the day before I go to bed...

To the parish chapel. It's always quiet, and it always has the aroma of incense. The most peaceful place on earth.

I usually will stay in my dorm room or just go for a walk or run around campus mostly. Sometimes though I also just go for a drive or sit by the lake.

"Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart."

Just getting out of the house and away from my normal surroundings allows me to connect better with God. That being said, I have a couple of favorite places I like to go, depending on where I am and what the issue is.

One place is to White Point, down at the end of Western Ave. in San Pedro.  Beautiful unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean!

Another place is to a cemetery.  If I need to sort out something emotional and end up having a melt-down, no one will bother me, because it's not unusual behavior for people to "come undone" at a cemetery.

And a third place I like to go is to a coffee house ( It's A Grind - not Starbucks ) or a favorite restaurant.

So, there you have it. My top three "peace and quiet" spots.

for peace and calm-ness, i turn to my iPod ... wherever i am, with my iPod i feel like i'm blocking out everything else and i can sit in my own world <3

Right between the area of the SI Yankee field and the the Staten Island Ferry is this small bench area overlooking the harbor. Even at rush hour, the bench area is tranquil because it's semi-out of the way and literally on the edge of the water. I love it best on overcast days. Something about a gray sky over NYC harbor that helps me think. That and riding the ferry at night. I'm a Queens gal, so it's an out-of-the-way place for me. But I still love it so.

Someplace outdoors where I can find a quiet place away from my regular surroundings. (That's tough though in the middle of winter in Wisconsin! ) There are a few parks I love to go to to walk, take a travel mug of coffee and listen to music on my ipod. And within those parks I've found places where I can be tucked away to sit and read/pray/worship/contemplate/journal etc. Those times usually help me get my eyes off myself and fixed back on Jesus, and as a result, my head gets put back on straight when it's all but fallen off!

...commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Psalm 4:4b.

Personally, I go to where my horses are, 15 arces of land... it quiet... peace ful. I also go to the creek and put my feet in if I can... it always ease my mind...

A big patch of green grass in the Texas country with cows grazing in the distance and long horn being rounded up on the other side. The pure thought of it makes me feel peaceful. It's wonderful.

I live in downtown Chicago, so peace and quiet is often hard to find.  However, I've discovered that first thing in the morning, before the sun rises, the city is pretty quiet.  Taking a run along the lakefront and running out to the light house at Oak Street Beach is an opportunity like none other for genuine peace and quiet.  What an amazing opportunity to meet with God before the rest of the city wakes up.  I run back to my apartment as the rest of the city begins to emerge, and I almost feel like I have a secret that no one else has after I've spent this time with God.

To the seashore... always to the sea. The sounds of the ocean clear my head. The rhythm of the waves awaken something inside of me that has been dormant far too long. A trip to the seashore leaves me changed every time. I find peace and a quiet center there.

anywhere involving NATURE, God's breathtaking creation.  the park, sitting by the lake, the beach...the possibilities are endless and change depending what part of the world i am in...it ever ceases to amaze me...i feel so connected to God and just a tranquil peace when surrounded by nature.

The roof of my hotel/condo building or the spa. The city's busy, but when you can look at it from way up it's really nice.

When I was a teenager, I used to go sit with my horse and talk to him.  Now, I go to my garden.  In my mind, I sit with Jesus overlooking the Sea of Gethsemene; he puts his arm around me, and I put my head on his shoulder.

  • Christismyrockforalways@xanga

It's quiet if you go at the right time: Taco Bell. No joke, my friends and I go there when we feel depressed or sad and (not only the food) the atmosphere there helps us feel better.

  • Cheri_Herald@xanga

I just moved the Sea of Galilee into the Garden of Gethsemane--it's a miracle!
