Christian Activists Boycotting Google
Guest post from sirnickdon
Some conservative Christians are advocating boycotting Google (a California-based company), because they oppose the attempt to revoke gay rights in California. So these Christians want to find other search engines to use, I guess, and will shut down their gmail accounts in favor of hotmail.
But why would we be surprised that Google would act contrary to our Christian faith? Google is part of the world; of course they will act like the world. So, go ahead, avoid using Google (harder than it appears, because they have a hand in a lot more than web searches), but also avoid Wal-Mart (whose concern is for profit and not the things of Christ), and don't support OPEC (which oppresses the poorest of the poor and supports systemic injustice worldwide)...
Eventually, we are left with a very small, very local church, shopping at farmers' markets and using public transportation or bicycles (all good ideas, by the way), or else we capitulate to the world, and allow some of our money, some of our support to the world, whether it's using Google to find an image, or watching an old Disney movie with our kids.
I guess I just can't get too up in arms about Google supporting gay marriage. And I'll still use gmail.
Would you boycott a company if they didn't agree with your beliefs? Are there any companies you boycott?

Um, no. No on both counts. Even if they advocate clubbing baby seals. Mmm, seals.
I think they're taking it over board. People have their opinions people don't all have to have the same beliefs, this is not a clone race we are not all the same.
I'd like to see them try, if they use the internet a lot they won't get far its just as bad as Microsoft going after google for not liking them absoutley rediculous!
I'm against gay marrage but you don't see me turning extreme just because someone doesn't follow my beliefs. Some people need to learn how to respect people's beliefs more.
At least you aren't being a total douche about Google's stance. I commend you. I'd only oppose or boycott a company if what they are doing is harming people or degrading people. You know, like Revelife?
@eclipse_the_dawn@xanga - Seals are delicious on rye bread, with the brains of infant orphans.
Google also cooperates with the Chinese Communist Party in preventing information on things like "rule of law", freedom, democracy, human rights, etc. from reaching the Chinese people. Some Chinese have been arrested for trying to find sites related to democracy and constitutionalism.
@Schristian@xanga - Mmm, orphans. I personally enjoy my Seal-Orphan sandwich with a nice wine mixed with the blood of demons, but that's just me. :D
I don't boycott anything except country music.
Boycotting because of beliefs is very much, not Christ-like. Who cares if they support gay marriage. I support the legalization of gay marriage because we are in America and it is fair. Boycott me!
Boycotting makes me angry. Sorry.
i'm all for boycotting places because of the harm they do to others, but that's stupid. there are too many non-religious companies out there to boycott. just because someone doesn't share your beliefs, doesn't make them bad. this group of people just need to learn respect and when to keep their mouth shut.
@Schristian@xanga - Mmmmmmm, that sounds delicious. Hahahah.
But in all seriousness, Google is doing the right thing. Some people are just dumb and stuck to respect others.
I meant to write "and learn to respect others." I don't know how I wrote stuck. Hahah.
That is incredibly overboard! It's people like that who make everyone else think Christians are stuck up.
And, I'm all for people having the right to legally be married. They deserve to be able to adopt, to see each other in the hospital, all those things that require a legal marriage. Just like some fundie groups have multiple marriages where only one wife is legally married to the man and the others are only married through the church, can't they be legally married outside the church without the church acknowledging the marriage?
America was not founded as a "Christian nation". We are a free nation, no matter what the church-produce propaganda tells you. That means religion should not have a factor in the laws.
@Schristian@xanga - I prefer sourdough...
@laytexduckie@xanga - Exactly. That's why I hate when people mistake ME for a Christian. I know some very kind Christians, but the majority of Modern Day Christians make me want to fornicate with goats, babies, and unwed teenage mothers right in front of them.
Out of spite. OUT OF FUCKING SPITE!
:anger fist:
@Schristian@xanga - You mean fornicate with Sarah Palin's daughter?
@jmallory@xanga - I'll boycott you. I'll boycott the HELL out of you. Goddamn open-minded pricks and your equal rights bullshit. I HATE YOU! But God loves you. Totally. Like a cheese sandwich mixed with Ex-Lax.
I like Gmail....so I am keeping mine.
I don't do a lot of boycotting
i work for google. and i'm a christian with conservative beliefs. while this is an issue that i spent a bit thinking over, i realize that if a company truly does believes in EOE rights, then they should support rights for all people. as the writer of this post said, yes, Google is a company of this world, so it would make sense to do so.
and when it comes to controversial topics such as these when does "being all things to all men" really become relevant?
@Schristian@xanga - Hahaha, that sounds like Mormonism. Hahahaha. Except without the gold plates.
I'd be pretty much screwed if I quit using google I use it for everything!
Just to add to my previous post =)
@laytexduckie@xanga - How does that sound like Mormons? I'm confused.
I just hope they are boycotting it because the Lord has called them to and not because of some legalistic worldview. Right or wrong, God will make something glorious from it. He always does, somehow.
@laytexduckie@xanga - Oh nevermind I missed part of that comment I get it.
If Google got it's super power juice from murdering people, then I'd boycott them. I'm a researcher. Avoiding Google would be a major pain in the butt.
@HOoN@xanga - The way I see it, most homosexuals don't claim Christianity. Because of this, we can't say what is right and wrong for them. Paul says this in 1 Cor. 5 12-13. This is why I am for gay marriage. It has nothing to do with me, and it won't hurt me or my belief in Christ in any way.
I don't think the "becoming all things to all men" doesn't really play into this. I think allowing gay marriage would be more of the Christian thing to do, rather than boycotting companies who support it, considering what Paul said pertaining to judging non-believers and believers. We know Jesus wouldn't boycott companies.
So it isn't really becoming all things to all people.... it is really just sticking to your Christian beliefs.
@Love__Chronicles@xanga - And how would they know if the "Lord" called them to it? It's simply because they're narrow-minded dicks who don't believe in equality. It's bad enough they want to deny people the right to marry based off of archaic religious dogma, but now they're attempting to subvert a major organisation based on that same ignorant dogma.
So fuck your comment.
@Schristian@xanga - [the majority of Modern Day Christians make me want to fornicate with goats...]
Since my addy is extremegoatmaster, and since goatmaster apparently means "one who fornicates with goats" according to the urban dictionary, isn't that MY job?! Man I wish I would've picked a better screenname...
Anyway I pretty much agree with you, although you should probably stay away from Revelife for a while before you go completely insane... and for that matter stay away from super-conservative Christians.
Also, at least the original author's uhh... "heart" is in the right place, although I still can't for the life of me figure out why homosexuality is so immoral save for the fact that the Bible says so and no-one has any (good) reason to believe it.
I only boycott companies that have serious human rights violations. (I try not to buy clothes that I know are made in sweat shops, for instance)
But I don't boycott companies just because the people who run them happen to see certain issues differently than I do. Otherwise, I'd only be able to buy from myself.
