Jesus is a Punk Bandmember...
by miss poppyA Revelife post asked what Jesus' church would be like if He was a pastor today. I'd like to share my answer to that question:
Jesus is a pastor today.
I read this in a book, and I agree with it: The goal of the Christian life is to be as much like Jesus would be in our life as possible. Lots of pastors are doing their best to be like this. The beauty of Christ's life in us is that He lives through us as much as we will let Him.
When our pastors get up to speak, they have Jesus in them, and He speaks. No human minister is a perfect temple, but all who have been saved do have Jesus' life in them.
We don't have to wonder what Jesus would do if He were on earth. He is on earth through His body, the church. He is a pastor in a large suburban megachurch where young professionals come to know Him. He is a street missionary who feeds the homeless. He is a home missions pastor in an Appalachian mountain town. He is the lady who has worked in the baby nursery for fifteen years. He is the prison chaplain who holds a Bible study every Thursday morning. He is the house mother who cares for five children orphaned by aids. He is the pipe organist and the punk bandmember. He is the medical missionary and the small group facilitator. He is the man who drives the bus to pick up kids in the inner city. He is the tattooed youth pastor and the robed priest.
What would Jesus' ministry look like on earth? Look around and you'll see. Every color, every economic situation, every ability. Creativity. You'll see preachers, musicians, artists, writers. You'll see traditional approaches, and you'll see crazy new things. In a word, you'll see Jesus, as His life flows through His people and gifts them with His divine creativity.
Jesus is everything and anything needed to reach every person. There are more than 6 billion people on earth. Jesus' ministry has the diversity to reach them all.
Who do you see Jesus in?

i don't have to wonder...Jesus is my pastor and He never changes, so i look up what He did if i have any questions...
I do agree. We are to be His hands and feet in this world where He cannot be physically. But I think sometimes it's important to evaluate are we truly being what He would want us to be or are we just becoming ruled by religious traditions. Jesus' presence is here through us in the church, and that makes it so much more important for us to make sure our focus is correct.
He speaks to me through music. I see Him in my pastor and in the homeless people who I see. I see Him in my husband and my children. I notice Him in the smile of a weary cart boy and the blogs of some Xangans.
I can only try so that others see Him in me.
I think reading this and thinking deeply about it made me actually tear up a little bit... I'm not sure why but it hit something for me. Thinking about every person in this world who goes about their jobs and duties every single day, some exhausted with no will to go on but they keep continuing... some running nonstop with endless energy... I can't really explain in words but I liked this post a lot!
@StarOfDelilah@xanga - tme meek inhearit
I think if Jesus were alive today he would be (1) One fo those religious leaders in L.A hanging out with and preaching too gangsters, stripers, prostitutes, and the tatooed OR (2) An emerging-type preacher who steps on toes in major ways that conflict/create tension with current norms.. lol, maybe a combination of the two. I think some would find Jesus awesome and the majority would find his boldness to be almost crazy, despite his obvious compassion or those in need.
@Doubledb@xanga - i agree :)
My friend kyle in kansas city is someone that i see Jesus in. He wears jeans and a hat to church and people yell at him about it, but he uses it as an opportunity to emphasize the importance of what's in your heart, not on your body. I have tattoos and some Christians i know have chastized me for it. I truly think God likes my tattoos. Why? It's yet another opportunity to talk about him. I have a gorgeous Celtic Cross on my back to remind me that Jesus says to take up your cross daily and follow him. I love that the church is really starting to accept that in the people who follow Christ :)
