God Says: Slow Down...
Guest blog submitted by QuackinDuckie22
School is back. And though I have not roamed the halls of school for years, I still find myself adversely affected by the return of school season. As some of you know, I ride the bus to work. Last week I started noticing something abnormal about my bus ride. At various locations the bus would slow down to the speed of a turtle walking through tar then return to the speed of regular life after a block or two. At first I thought maybe there was just an deathly slow car impending the speed of the bus, but after a few days I began to notice a correlation between all these locations. SCHOOL ZONES.
Though I feel that I could never possibly get anywhere on time if I actually obey the school zone rules, riding the bus has proved the opposite true. I have found that even driving through the school zone the bus still gets me to my stop at the same time before school began. This brought me to some interesting conclusions.
Sometimes in life, God tells us we need to slow down. Maybe we're overwhelming ourselves with life, doing so much that we don't even have time to think, let alone spend time with Him. Possibly, we are in a rush to get to a certain point in life that God knows we're not ready for, i.e. dating, marriage, ministry, leadership, etc.
And though I hate to compare God to the government, please bear with me for sake of analogy: God really has our best interest in mind when telling us to slow down. Like in school zones, I can count on one finger how many times I have seen a child in a school zone during the mandatory slow down hours, and honestly it doesn't make sense why I have to slow down most of the time. But we slow down anyways knowing that all it takes is one time to damage someone else's life.
God unlike the government is omniscient and can tell us exactly when a child will be in the school zone of our life and He will only tell us to slow down when He knows its necessary. But being infallibly human many of us don't listen, and then when we hit a child that we didn't notice we blame God.
How many people have you heard question God when their marriage fails or when they fail in a position of leadership? If they would have listened in the beginning, they would have been protected from that situation and, just like the bus, would have gotten to the destination that they need at the right time without all the hardship.
So when God puts a school zone up in your life. Obey the speed limit. It's for your benefit.
Have you ever felt God directing you to put the brakes on your life a little?

Chronic illness was a huge school zone in my life. I have come to see it, though, like we're little children running around, and God is our dad who wants to give us a hug and help us calm down in His love. Sometimes we're going so fast that we miss Him calling our name and holding out His arms. School zones are when He comes into the way and picks us up and slows us down. We struggle because it feels like we're in time-out, but the reality is that our daddy wants us to relax into His arms and receive His love. We're the ones who think it's punishment, but He wants to show us His love; when we're going at full speed all the time, we sometimes miss Him. He is so gracious that He does whatever it takes to reach us and slow us down, giving us an opportunity to listen to Him and receive His comfort and affection.
Yeah, I think the consequence for some things gives me the notion to slow down a little. Â Sometimes, we want faster end results, but we can only speed up so fast.
I liked this alot.
Keep it up
wow.... good point.
Yeppers. Many times. Sometimes I listened willingly. Sometimes I listened grudgingly. And sometimes I didn't listen at all.
yep... if i'm late or i'm sick or i make it just in time no matter how late i am... i usually think it's God telling me to slow down. if there are times i'm messing my friends up (it's thesis month in school), they get upset or tell me to relax and i think it's God asking me to slow down and leave it all up to Him. it's a wonderful feeling... =)
Wow! This post has come right when I needed it. I've been very stressed with all the stuff I've taken on lately to the point where I can't always think straight and get quite forgetful. God has definitely been telling me to slow down through my own stresses and thoughts, through the words of concern from friends and family, through devotionals......and now, this too.
