  • Fireproof Your Marriage

    miss dandelion by mrs dandelion

fireproof2008-2 A reader sent me a link to the movie Fireproof, due out next month, starring Kirk Cameron (from Growing Pains and the Left Behind series fame). I had never heard of this movie but was surprised to see it's backed by several Christian organizations.

Here's the synopsis and the trailer:

At work, inside burning buildings, Capt. Caleb Holt lives by the old firefighter’s adage: Never leave your partner behind. At home, in the cooling embers of his marriage, he lives by his own rules.

Growing up, Catherine Holt always dreamed of marrying a loving, brave firefighter...just like her daddy. Now, after seven years of marriage, Catherine wonders when she stopped being "good enough" for her husband.

Regular arguments over jobs, finances, housework, and outside interests have readied them both to move on to something with more sparks.

As the couple prepares to enter divorce proceedings, Caleb's father challenges his son to commit to a 40-day experiment: "The Love Dare." Wondering if it's even worth the effort, Caleb agrees-for his father's sake more than for his marriage. When Caleb discovers the book's daily challenges are tied into his parents' newfound faith, his already limited interest is further dampened.

While trying to stay true to his promise, Caleb becomes frustrated time and again. He finally asks his father, "How am I supposed to show love to somebody who constantly rejects me?"

When his father explains that this is the love Christ shows to us, Caleb makes a life-changing commitment to love God. And with God's help he begins to understand what it means to truly love his wife.

But is it too late to fireproof his marriage? His job is to rescue others. Now Caleb Holt is ready to face his toughest job ever ... rescuing his wife's heart.

I'm really curious about how this movie will do at the box office. It looks like most of the promotions are grassroots. The movie sounds really interesting and I'm curious to see how the two main characters overcome their marital strife.

Has any one heard of this movie? Will you be checking this out?

    ok my interest is piqued...

  • Pickwick12@xanga

I saw something about this. Isn't it somehow affiliated with the "Facing the Giants" creators? I had an ad for this movie stuck on the front of my "Giants" dvd when it came in the mail.

    I think this sounds interesting.

  • junshien@xanga

unfortunately, the trailer has more than its share of cheesy lines ...  :(

  • mrcolorful@xanga

I'll definitely go see that movie when it comes out.

  • pinksunfiredragon

I will probably see this movie, however, I don't go to movies in the theater, so I'll probably be waiting until it comes out on DVD. :)

  • NightlyDreams@xanga

it's suppose to be a really good movie all the way around.

  • MastersWay@xanga

I see this and I have to ask myself, "Why?"  Why does he have to pray on camera?  Why does his friend have to give him a goofy pep talk?  Why is it a 40 day challenge with what amounts to a daily devotional book?  Why does there have to be a giant wooden cross?

I could be wrong.  Maybe it's actually good.  But from my experience with Christian cinema, my hopes are not high.

  • DirtyAndShaken@xanga

@MastersWay@xanga -  Couldn't agree more.  I like Christian-based films, but find the 'not in your face the whole time' films far more appealing.

I'll probably see it on DVD - but mainly because I'm a firefighter and it's very hard for me to let any movie about firefighting/ers pass me by.  ~Andi

I think it will be a great movie and a good reminder that living a christian life is a daily walk with God in ALL areas of our lives.

  • TheMarriedFreshman@xanga

I'll check it out because I so very much want it to be good. I'm afraid, but I'm interested. A movie about a married couple trying to make it work? I definitely want to see that.

But I hated Left Behind. And while Facing the Giants brought the emotion (IMO), it wasn't really well-done.

Not sure if I'm gonna throw down 8 bucks to see it, but maybe I will to support them. Hopefully it will do well in the Box Office.

  • ChildofGod86@xanga

Sounds interesting at least. It's a possibility

yeah I'm not big into overtly christian films. I'm a film studies major in school, along with being a filmmaker myself, its always kind of hard watching these types of movies (i.e. Left Behind). This film's trailer feels forced, usually trailers aren't that long, and not that revealing either. It almost seems kind of desperate in getting people to watch it.

I remember a little while back, when a movie 'Bella' came out. It wasn't overtly christian, but there were certainly christian overtones (i.e. abortion is bad, love is good)
It's those kinds of films, like Bella, that IMO achieves a film's potential to spark conversation and discussion. In the back of your mind, you got the point after watching the film, but there were still murky areas where discussion could take place. That's the mark of a good film, meaning that is subtly introduced but powerful enough to influence.

This movie is from the makers of Facing the Giants.  It's the third movie from Sherwood pictures (www.sherwoodpictures.com).  The first was Flywheel.  The cool thing about these movies is that they are NOT professional productions.  Both Flywheel and FTG were filmed entirely with volunteer actors and crew from one church.  When you keep in mind that the sets, script, actors, filming, directing was done by volunteers with a heart to share with the world how Christ can dramatically affect lives - they become a work of art.  Watch Flywheel first, then FTG and you'll see the leaps in quality between the films.  Fireproof is even better (I've seen it) and hopefully, God will continue to bless this church in their efforts to reach the world through a different media.

Please see this movie opening weekend at the theater nearest you.  Sony bases how many theaters the movie is released to on the amount of tickets sold opening weekend.

May God use this film all over the world to bring people to Him.  Only He can fully repair relationships and heal our world from the pain of separation and divorce.

Never heard of it but it sounds good...

  • Opaque_Life@xanga

I saw the trailer when I went to see the Dark Knight

I can't wait til this  comes out! =]

looks soooo sweet. tearjerker. like its meant to be a Lifetime movie...

  • livingfortommorow@xanga

sounds interesting. perhaps I'll see it; I'm going to be a broke college student though. haha

  • immortalwithout@xanga

The synopsis gave away the whole movie. Unfortunately I pay for more suspense than that. I think I'll pass.

  • PrincessOfSeptember@xanga

I've been waiting for this movie for months already and I can't wait to see it!

I saw the Left Behind movie and I really didn't like it.  I loved the book and the whole series and own all the hard backs.  Movies are never as good as the books.  I have not seen any of the movies that maddyaddy mentioned, but now that she has told the background about these movies I will see them all.  The trailer to this one had me in tears.  Maybe because I've been through a bad marriage where my husband was not interested in working to save it.  Even happily remarried, it can still make me cry.  I better take a box of tissue!
    Thanks for posting this!

  • Asianjelly@xanga

Going to see this with my youth group. Cant wait!!! Looks really good.

  • cuteNcuddly30@xanga

The movie is really good. I have seen it as a sneak preview where I attend grad school. I encourage anyone to go see it opening weekend if possible. It is a tear jerker though so do bring tissues if you are a cryer.
