  • Biblical Celebrities: Who Would You Want to Meet in Heaven?

    goldenrod by miss goldenrod

    cloudsheaven

Here's a fun question: Not including a member of the Trinity, which person from the Bible are you most excited to meet in Heaven and why?

I was watching Walking the Bible last night and when the narrator mentioned walking in the footsteps of Moses, I let out a tiny, geeky squeal!  I said to God that I am so looking forward to meeting this guy.  I'll probably gush and fawn over him like a twelve-year old girl would over Hannah Montana.

I'll say, “Oh my goodness, it’s you!  It’s Moses!  I am such a huge fan of yours!  Here, would you sign my Bible?!  How did you ever put up with those people?!”

Suddently, it was as if the Holy Spirit chimed in for Moses in this imaginary dialogue and said, “Oh my goodness, it’s you! Oh wow...I’m just crazy about when you did ______.”

And that’s where “Moses” stopped talking, and I was reminded of this:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.  Hebrews 12:1, NIV

This verse immediately follows the famous Faith chapter, the veritable "who's-who?" of the Bible's greatest persons.  Hebrews says we are surrounded by all of these people, meaning that my hero Moses is watching what I'm doing.

In filling in for Moses, what was the Holy Spirit saying?  Was he telling me that Moses will have just as much to compliment me on?  Was he saying that I have an opportunity to make something of my life which could cause Moses to have something to gush over?  Was he saying both?

According to Hebrews, all the greats of the Bible are watching us.  Imagine the reception Martin Luther might have received from all those mentioned in Hebrews 11.  Or Mother Teresa.  Did King James get some congenial slaps on the back for commissioning a translation of the scripture?  What of all the martyrs that are dying still today for Jesus?!  Imagine their reception!

So, when you think of which Scriptural Celebrity you're going to run to find after meeting God, Jesus, family members, and beloved pets, take a moment and remember that you've done some things as well and that just perhaps your hero may be running to find you.

Who are you excited to meet in Heaven?

Imagine Cassie Bernall meeting Joan of Arc. Interesting thought.

I would like to meet Ruth, the Moabite who wasn't supposed to receive any blessings from God, but by His grace chose Him and became part of Jesus' family line.

I would also love to meet Enoch, who apparently didn't die, but was just taken up to heaven. How wild is that?

Or Elijah, who was taken to heaven in a chariot of fire. And I would like to ask Elisha what he was thinking when he saw that happen!

I would like to meet the man who was crucified with Jesus, who had no hope until He was dying and Jesus promised to take him to heaven.

I was thinking recently: Heaven is for ETERNITY, so I will have "time" to meet every single person who is there.

    Elijah.  That guy was insane.

  • bittersunday@xanga

Paul so I can punch him.  XD XD XD

  • TheGiantSlayer@xanga

@bittersunday@xanga - lol, punch him why?
I have some reasons as a follower of scripture... But i am curious as of context here ( if there is any)

  • Pickwick12@xanga

@Zayin_michael@xanga -  I was wondering the same thing, but I didn't want bittersunday to think I'm badgering her, since I already asked her questions today.

  • Pass_the_Aura@xanga

I'm very curious to find out what George MacDonald's opinion is of the musical settings I've made of several of his poems.  And I'll have to give some sincere thanks to R. A. Torrey.  But most likely G. K. Chesterton will be the most fun just to hang out with.

(Or were we looking specifically for Biblical characters here?  I'll go for the unconventional: I'd love to collaborate on some songs with Asaph and Jeduthun.)

  • bittersunday@xanga

@Zayin_michael@xanga - I disagree with a LOT of what he says in the Epistles.  Which, granted, is not a good reason to punch someone and is not why I'd want to give him a good old knuckle sandwich.  It's more the way he is presented in his Epistles that makes me think "Wow.  You're irritating.  Not only do I disagree with you, which is fine, but you're an ass about it.".

( And yes, I realize the context of why the Epistles were written and why some of them were so harsh.  I realize that Paul was an antagonistic individual who said things that people didn't want to hear but felt they needed to hear because god said so, etc. etc. etc.  I still think he was an ass.  I still would like to punch him. )

  • bittersunday@xanga

    @Pickwick12@xanga - I wouldn't think you were badgering me.

  • TheGiantSlayer@xanga

@bittersunday@xanga - I feel that way about a lot of pastors.

I wanna punch 'em square in the kidneys. Interestingly enough, due to their improper interpretation of pauls writings.

What do you disagree with if you don't mind my asking?
and do you not have a problem with any other author or the rest of the bible?

  • leadworshipper82

    ok... i got a list...

    The Apostles... all 12
    Elijah
    Enoch
    King David
    King Solomon
    King Saul
    Stephan (the first martyr)

among others come to mind just no time to write it all down...

  • Pickwick12@xanga

@leadworshipper82 - Oh, Stephen is a good one! I get goose bumps thinking about the fact that he saw Jesus standing for him when he was martyred!

  • droftreeology@xanga

    Mary.

And I'd LOVE to talk to St. Patrick. (Since I'm going to be a missionary to Ireland someday.) St. Patrick is my homeboy. :P

  • bittersunday@xanga

@Zayin_michael@xanga - I have a lot of issues with a lot of the Bible.  ^^  Mainly the Old Testament, but a lot of the authorship of the O.T. is left up to tradition.

And I'd say what I disagreed with in the Epistles / the Bible, but I'm not really up for a religious debate at the moment.

  • TheGiantSlayer@xanga

@bittersunday@xanga - Me Neither. i find most debates to be fruitless. I respect other peoples right to choose to not believe something providing that they have spent the time to figure out why they do not believe something.  As for me, I spent a lot of time in the Christian church believing everything that was told to me, and it wasn't until i started to read the bible that I found that what I was taught was not exactly what the bible said.  I hope you see my sincerity when I state that I was looking for discussion and not argumentation. Just curious about what your thoughts were/are.

  • Pieces_of_a_Melody@xanga

Hmmm... this is a toughie. But I've always been a big fan of most of the Judges, just because the stories are so interesting. So I'd like to meet them...

  • leadworshipper82

@bittersunday@xanga - ummm if i may... could it be that the reason so much disagreement w/ the OT is directed because there is a lack of contextual understanding of it... which is the majority of self-proclaimed Christians today....

i mean, many don't know some of the stories and the parallels of Christ that are so profoundly seen in the OT....

but the fact that you disagree w/ the OT... i mean... essentially if what Scripture is true about itself that it is God's expressed Word... then by definition... aren't you basically disagreeing with God Himself.... if the claims of the Bible are in fact true?

@Zayin_michael@xanga - i agree w/ you on that point about finding out for yourself.... i posted a blog a while ago about how we have in our self-centered narcissistic Christian culture, we have taken the Bible and twisted it to mean what it never was meant to mean... Jeremiah 29:11 for example... we use it to pat ourselves on the back, never really reading it in context to be a promised based on pro-creation and marriage... and other such verses like that.... the more i think we read and study Scripture and the more we just glean perspective from the sermons we listen to, i think God has a way of molding our understanding of His Word rather than us molding God's Word to fit our ideals, which in my honest thought should never happen...

  • Photographer1986@xanga

    I have a list (too)...

Ruth, Abigail, Issac, Enoch, John, most beloved disciple, all the Mary(s), King David...

  • la_faerie_joyeuse@xanga

Well, technically he wouldn't be in Heaven, but I'd really LOVE to meet Judas.

  • Pariahtich@xanga

    I've a list.
I'd love to talk with the woman at the well.
    Have a chat with Bathsheba.
Tea with the woman who wept over Jesus' feet and cleansed his feet with her hair (Mary Magdalene?).
    Talk to Rahab.
speak with the adulterous woman who had been brought to Jesus to be stoned,
I can identify with these women because they were all pariahs that God saved and Redeemed.
    With Absalom's sister Tamar.
then I'd get round to some of the more..upstanding examples. Such as Ruth.
Miriam. Abigail because of her wisdom. The list, and why I'd seek them out, could go on ad infinitum. So I will spare you and stop here.

  • AnieT@xanga

I've never really thought about that.

I guess I don't see the Bible heros as any different than what I would be once we're in Heaven.  For all we know, they'd think we were heros.

  • jussbu@xanga

i would love to meet (in no particular order):

David, Noah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Joseph (son of Jacob), Esther, Paul, Stephen (martyred for Jesus) and Moses (and many more but too many to name.

  • Pickwick12@xanga

@AnieT@xanga - Good point-because they see things the way they really are. They see the real spiritual impact of things we think are small or insignificant. It's like the fact that in their lifetime they didn't necessarily think things they did were significant, but we do.

  • keith_tan@xanga

    David!

he's an example of how we should view any tough our situation in life as: it's not how big my problem is, it's how BIG my GOD is.

and he was a man after God's heart!

then there's Elijah, Noah, Daniel, John, Paul and Moses.

  • Pickwick12@xanga

I would like to know what Jesus was like on earth, exactly what made people want to follow Him, even though He looked ordinary. I would like to know how He came across in normal conversation, what kind of sense of humor He had.

  • JandJinJapan@xanga

I'm challenging Samson to a weight lifting contest when I get there!!!

No, really, there are many that I wish to meet.

I, too, wonder if Hebrews 12.1 is talking about heavenly witnesses or earthly ones. The reason we are to throw off the sin that entagles us is becasue unbelievers are watching Christians, to see if they are for real or not.  While I do believe that heaven's population does watch us, I don't think that this passage is referring to them...
