To Christians, What's More Offensive than Gay Marriage?
I say, lots of things.
This is one of those hot topics that Christians are known for ardently debating in politics, church, etc. And with the recent legalization of gay marriage in California and now Massachusetts in the process of allowing non-resident gay couples to marry in their state, it's very much at the forefront of news, politics, and people's minds. It's one of the few things that really gets some Christians' blood boiling and sends churches in uproar.But sometimes I wonder why exactly this offends people as much as it does?
Let's get some things straight first - God never condones homosexuality. Yes, I know this, I get it. Homosexuality is a sin according to the Bible. But so is lying, drunkenness, jealousy, cheating, selfishness, idolatry, and all other acts of sexual immorality. So I just wonder why we elevate this sin above so many others? I don't recall reading about Jesus outright condemning homosexuality during his ministry on earth (but please correct me if I'm wrong), so why do we target this issue and gay individuals as much as we do?
I'm not going to lie and tell you that I'm 100% ok with gay marriage. I'm not. And honestly, I still get squeamish when I see a gay couple together. But if Christians are so offended by homosexuals, why are we not just as enraged by the other things that go on in this world?
Here's at least one thing that offends me more than gay marriage: the prevalence of pornography in our society. It's a multi-billion dollar industry that degrades both men and women, is available to children, encourages unbridled lust, and has a better chance of breaking up your marriage than your gay neighbors down the street have. But I rarely hear of the church and Christians going out in droves to protest this industry.
I think there's a ton of other things besides gay marriage which Christians should be more than or equally angry about, but that's just my opinion.
Do you ever feel like the church unfairly targets homosexuals? Or are we simply upholding God's design of marriage?
(Healthy debate is always welcome, but let's avoid any derogatory name-calling please.)

i completely agree with the pornography. God created everyone then He created gays too just as he created straight people. in all honesty gays don't bother me as much as the thought of lusty people addicted to porn. i think the church doesnt go after it because its more accepted than homosexuality. but i should be pursued instead of just regular people who make different proteins in their brains.
@ChrisRusso@xanga - I agree with ya, but we all fall short and are no more worthy of death then any other sinner. I thank jesus for his sacrifice .
There is nothing wrong with homosexuality..I am straight ..but I respect and support gay rights and marriage. It's definitely true that the church puts a lot of emphasis on homosexuality and ignores all the rest..such hypocrisy truly has no place in a modern society. Many of my christian friends hate gay people..but the craziest thing about it all is that they actually and wholeheartedly believe they have the right to.
Beneath that exterior of 'sin' that they keep proclaiming on everyone, there lies a human being; who has worth simply for being human if not anything else. The church should stop demeaning and disregarding others who simply don't share its beliefs.
Stop the hate. Honestly, at the end of the day..Do you you really think it's justified?
I'm both gay and catholic, i was born both ways. I personally do not believe I chose to be gay. My mom claims to be bi-sexual, so is her sister, my little brother seems to be gay lol jk jk. But back to the point, I think Christians should just focus on themselves and God rather than worrying about other peoples beliefs and lifestyles. If someone sins then oh well, "they'll go to hell" but how does it affect you? Everyone sins, and I've known alot of very christiany christian people and they can be the most hypocritical people ever, they sin too. My grandmother for example, praises the lord, has walked into a church on her knees prays everyday, but she talks so much shit to me about my sexuality but she had a child before she was married, she's the greediest person ever, she's even envious of other people. last i heard envy is quite the sin too.. are some sins worse than other? what about the christians that beat homosexuals to their deaths, what happened to the sixth commandment? i think theres much bigger issues in this world than someone just living the way they want to, christians should focus on what theyre doing wrong. As far as pornography, i think it's pretty stupid, pornography easily gets in the hands of young kids, especially through ppv. How about instead of trying to throw your beliefs and religions on people we teach children that sex before marriage is a SIN and if they choose to sin in that way.. teach them about protection.. not all male porn stars use a condom. Christians should be worrying about and teaching their children right from wrong rather than telling gays that theyre going to go to hell.. all sins are forgiven didn't the bible say that too?
Christianity is, and should remain, a private faith, as it is based on a series of decisions the believer must personally make regarding what he or she chooses to believe in. There is no banner claiming God to be real or the story of Jesus to be true blazing across the sky, and miracles and proof of Christ are really what we make of them. There's a reason you have to have faith like a child- because, like the existence of Santa Claus, it's fun and easy to believe until you begin to introduce science and logic to the equation. Looking at the world through a religious paradigm leads people to find all sorts of "proof"- like the many Virgin Mary citings in tortillas and cat fur, or, according to Kirk Cameron, the existence of the banana. None of this matters, though, as you either believe in God or you don't. No mystical patteron of water damage on the side of a house is going to convince you otherwise.
So then, having decided to believe in the Bible, despite the fact that Bible scholars are able to carve up large portions of the Book like a holiday turkey, why would you force your personal beliefs on anyone else?
As the decision to believe in the Bible and to believe the Bible actually says homosexuality is wrong is a personal one, this belief should be about your personal life, not forced on the world.
It's funny to see how possessive Christians can be of the institution of marriage- as if heterosexuals are doing such a good job of taking care of it in the first place, with a 50% divorce rate among both Christians and non-Christians. In fact, the divorce rate among couples at my Baptist university was (at the time I attended) around 65%.
Christians cite the high rate of promiscuity among homosexuals as the reason for prohibiting them from getting married. Do you know the percentage of abandoned kids in orphanages or aborted babies brought about because of homosexual relationships? Zero. It turns out the only people affected by the relationship of two gays are just the two people in the relationship. And it's not like all or even a large majority of homosexuals choose to sleep with a large random selection of people, just like it's not true that being a heterosexual cures you of ever being unfaithful or waiting until you're married to have sex. Let's be reasonable and fair here.
Some of my closest friends are gay and I've seen how the discriminatory laws of this country can affect the lives of the people I love- beyond just marriage, but even the ability for two people in love to be able to be together at all. All this because someone decided to feel all high and mighty and vote to force what should have been a personal decision upon everyone else.
@leadworshipper82 - You saddened? No truly..I am. And the rest of the civilized world probably is too. Saddened at all your senseless hate. You know what, take it somewhere else...say..your cave. yeah..that's right..just crawl right back in. Go ahead and take back your heritage, righteousness, bumper stickers, rainbows, and purple colors..oh and along the way, maybe try to take a heart as well. I sure don't want anything to do with your religion..seriously. You're an embarrassment.
@sasha - senseless hate... wait a second...
it's hate when a Christian doesn't condone, advocate, speaks against opposing lifestyle views...
it's open-minded opinion when a homosexual bashes Christians for their own sake... i love the duality behind all of this...
all i'm saying is that the homosexual community should be original... grab your own symbols or create them yourselves rather than ripping off symbols rooted in Judeo-Christian ideals and twisting them to your own ways... that's all I'm saying...
hate... what is this hate... of course it's considered hate when a Christian is adamantly opposed to the homosexual lifestyle and wants nothing to do with it... but OH WAIT A MINUTE... it's an open-minded opinion when a homosexual bashes Christians...
truly comedic... truly...
@laytexduckie@xanga - Propss.
@meriibunny@xanga - Homosexuality is caused when a**holes decide that it's fun to play around with the opposite sex and rip their hearts open. I am not serious.
@meriibunny@xanga - Question, who has proven that homosexuality is genetic?
Ok, two questions, do you think that since God so openly condones heterosexual marriage that if gay marriage was OK then God would condone it just as much? Yet he doesn't. Why the silence?
@hillsidemusicman@xanga - here you go.
Homosexuality = genes + environment. And if not, then what?
And isn't Jesus about loving everyone, no matter what? God loves everyone, too, no matter what race, sex, orientation, etc. We're all equal in his eyes. Homosexual or not. So shouldn't homosexuals have the same rights as heterosexuals?
And the Bible is written by man. So don't even go there. Yeah, yeah, it's God's word. But if it's not written by God himself, I'm not having it.
@meriibunny@xanga - Thank you for your response. You are correct in several things. There is no arguing that environment has a huge impact on sexual choices. I believe that a certain environment makes people more prone to homosexuality. When I asked about genetic evidence, I was asking about scientific proof that people have a gene that makes them homosexual or heterosexual. So far, I've not seen that proven. I could be wrong, but I've not read anywhere that there's an actual physical gene within the DNA structure.
You are also right that Jesus does teach us to love everyone, and He loved everyone. He loved them by meeting their physical needs. He saved a prostitute from getting stoned and he healed many people. What we forget sometimes is that God is Holy and he cannot be in the presence of sin. Jesus, while loving everyone also told those that he loved on more than one occassion to "go and sin no more" This statement was not conditional, as Jesus had already met the need before he said this, but it was a clear call for those that he loved to be Holy.
@superlawyergirl@xanga - How is it that Christians have to keep their religion and beliefs to themselves, but others don't have to?
@laytexduckie@xanga - The word is surrogate mothers. Just thought you should know. Other than that, I believe we may be in agreement for the most part.
Okay, this was a great post, and here are my opinions on it...
"Homosexuality is a sin according to the Bible. But so is lying, drunkenness, jealousy,
cheating, selfishness, idolatry, and all other acts of sexual
immorality. So I just wonder why we elevate this sin above so many
others?"
I think that the reason I, and maybe not others, but maybe others feel so strongly about this is because we feel it is something we can help change. We can't stop people from lying or getting drunk, and cheating and being selfish. I can try, and I DO. A lot. I try hard. But that's not something we can vote on to outlaw (I can't vote anyway, sooo...)
And don't get me wrong, I do not hate gay people, in fact, I have a lot of gay or bisexual friends, and we get along great, but I do not believe what they believe. God made WOMEN and MEN, and told us to be fruitful and multiply. I DO believe there is a reason God made man and women. And also through that is the natural way to have children, which God intended.
"But
if Christians are so offended by homosexuals, why are we not just as
enraged by the other things that go on in this world?"
I am... actually, not enraged. More so depressed, because we as humans have made ourselves animals. And actually, I'm not even enraged by gay people, they just make me sad, because I know something happened to them to make them like that. But also, gay marriage isn't even the thing that makes me the saddest. Abortion is, and that actually enrages me, because it is murder of the innocent. But yeah, I DO get sad and depressed about other things in the world, too.
