Question of the Day: Atheist Offers to Feed Pets Left Behind After the Rapture
Last month, an atheist put up a Craiglist ad titled "Your Pets Will Not Be Flagged For Removal By Jesus During the Rapture" , which wound up being nominated for the "Best of Craigslist" category. The advertiser offers to take care of Christians' pets for $50 after the rapture occurs, since animals haven't accepted Jesus as their savior. The poster also included the picture to the left in the ad.
"As an atheist, I will surely still be here on this earth post rapture and would love to look after your pets for a small fee and make sure they are still well taken care of after you and your family have been raptured," the user says. Click the cut to read the whole ad.
FLAGGERS: Over half the United States population has legitimate concerns about what will happen to their pets after the rapture occurs. Please respect their faith and allow this service to remain posted, just as the waste removal and grooming posts remain posted. Again, over half of the US population feels that this is a concern to them. If there is a specific problem with the ad, please email me. Thank you.

"No one knows when that day or hour will come. Even the angels in heaven and the Son don't know. Only the Father knows."
(Matthew 24:36)
"For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord."
(1 Thessalonians 4:15–17)
Have you ever thought about what will happen to your pets after Jesus comes back to claim the souls of the saved during the Rapture and deliver them to heaven to enjoy ever lasting life? The bible clearly teaches that only those that have accepted Jesus as their savior will enter heaven (John 14:6, Romans 3:23), and we all know that pets do not have the cognitive ability to do this, so what will happen to your beloved pets? Surely without you there, they would be stuck inside your empty house, starving to death with no one to feed them, let them out to potty, or clean their litter box. This is probably not what you envision for your pets after you are gone. This is where I come in.
I am here to offer you pet care service for after the rapture. As an atheist, I will surely still be here on this earth post rapture and would love to look after your pets for a small fee and make sure they are still well taken care of after you and your family have been raptured. You will be able to look down on them from heaven and see them being well cared for by me and living happy, healthy lives. Do not let my atheism scare you! I am a moral and loving pet owner and would never do harm to any animal.
For a small deposit of only $50, you can be assured that your pets will be well cared for from the time that you are raptured until the end of their natural life. They will get adequate amounts of food, water, and shelter as well as plenty of exercise and socialization as I would imagine there will be a lot of pets that will be abandoned by Jesus the pet hater that will need to be cared for.
If interested, please email me for my PayPal address (you can also send me a check if you prefer) so you can assure that your pets will be taken care of after Jesus comes to take your soul to heaven. $50 is only a small price to pay to know that while you are enjoying everlasting bliss, your pets will be cared for until their end days. Thanks and have a great day!
Please do not flag this ad. It is very serious. What is your reaction to this ad - is it funny, satirical, mocking....believable?! Do YOU worry about your pets being "left behind?"

I really hope people actually send this guy money. I see it as a sort of stupidity tax.
I'm dying I esp. love the parting shot of "jesus the pet hater". that sort of tells you right there its satirical despite it's scamming smarminess.
Wow.
My first reaction was a laugh, but I laugh really easily, so that's not so surprising. As I started to read this, I was thinking this is hilarious. Who would actually do this?
I do see the satirical elements as well too, and slight mocking tone...though I think he's really doing it more just to be funny and see who might actually be dumb enough to send him $50. I agree with huginn's point on that...
I've never thought a whole lot about the rapture, so that's never been a concern to me. I don't plan on having pets though.
@huginn@xanga - Agreed. My reaction is O..M....G.... Do I need to make the comment that.. atheists.. don't believe in God... and therefore should not believe that the rapture will happen? This is wrong on so many levels...
Well, considering that the rapture is false doctrine...yeah, it shouldn't be a problem.
@Nikolais_apprentice@xanga - It's pretty clearly disingenuous. He posted the ad:
1.) To mock
2.) To make a quick (smirk-filled) buck.
There's also nothing to make sure that he'd actually carry ou the pet-caring task if he got the chance.
I think its funny. I'd tell him I'd pay every month he actually took care of my pets, as I wouldn't be there it'd be great! hahaha
Satirical. And a shade of mocking. But still very, very funny (I hope we Christians can take it as well as dish it out?).
The biggest giveaway is the made-up statistics: "Over half of the US population feels that this is a concern to them." Uh-huh. And 46.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot. And 2 out of 3 people are gullible.
I do find it interesting philosophically that this fellow seems to indicate that he would remain an atheist even if the rapture occurred before his very eyes. Surely that would be a bit of a tip-off on the whole God question?
Too bad for this guy's business that "creation itself [presumably including pets?] also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God." (Rom. 8:21)
I am taking my dog with me!!
Interesting. Although if we are worried about how our pets are being taken care of more than the fact that someone is going to be left behind, priorities might need to be reconsidered. I really feel that God will take care of my pets the way he takes care of all his creations on this earth that are without cognitive capabilities. What is more important is that this person, who I know doesn't really believe in the rapture, is ok with a life permanently away from God.
I don't think if the rapture happened, this person would be concerned with whether the dog got a walk today.....
I would like to know how much money he or she gets.
I think it's very amusing, and it's obvious that he was kidding.
This is amazing. ^_^
@Pass_the_Aura@xanga - He doesn't say he would remain an atheist. He just says that as one, he surely won't be going. If you change your mind once you SEE god smiting people and whatnot, I don't think that counts.
It may be amusing, but many people will fall for it and give him the money. How many people have fallen for the whole sceintology thing, even after those who started it admitted it was a scam? We want security here on earth, for ourselves and those, even our pets, we love.
at least he has morals... lol.
This is why I think the rapture is a stupid thing to worry about.
I think it's funny, although I don't think the rapture is biblical at all. I don't mean to change the subject too much, but here's why...
There are only two major passages used to support the rapture. The first is Matthew 24:36-44.
No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For
in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
This passage is used to talk about the rapture a lot - but look at the analogy Jesus uses at the beginning. It is of Noah and the flood, and the ones who are 'taken' are ones who are judged. Noah is the one who is 'left behind!' The first century person that would have heard the story would have understood that the person who was taken was being judged! In this story, you want to be 'left behind.' It doesn't make sense to take a story in which the wicked are taken away to judgment, and twist it to mean that the righteous will be taken away.
The second passage used to support the rapture is 1 Thessalonians 4:18-23.
Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.
Back then, whenever Kings would return from a long journey, a delegate of people from the city would go out and meet the King as he returned, and escort him back into the city. That's the analogy that is being used. So when people 'meet Jesus in the
clouds,' it's as if they're escorting him back to earth. I don't know if we will literally meet Jesus in the sky, or if it's just being compared to the practice of the time - but either way, we're not being 'stolen away.' Jesus is returning to earth.
Also notice that there is a voice of the archangel and a trumpet - this hardly sounds like some sort of 'silent rapture' when all the Christians are taken away. In fact, every time the return of Christ is mentioned, there are loud noises and trumpets.
It's also important to remember that Revelation never mentions a rapture. People have built an entire theology of the rapture based on these two misinterpreted verses. It's also a relatively new idea, originating in the late 1800's. Just some things to think about!
loved it. i want to send him money for being so awesome.
also, it's hypocritical to say that he's full of shit because as an atheist, he doesn't believe in the Rapture. if it's truly that relative from your perspective, he never needs to worry about going to Hell, since he doesn't believe in that, either.
the Rapture dogma is such crap. every generation since Christ has thought they were going to be whisked away into the clouds, while the evil-doers suffered below. it's like the boy who cried wolf too many times...
So, in the days of Noah, who was taken and who remained?
@AngelBeast777@xanga - According to Jesus, the ones who were "taken" were the evil people, who were taken by the flood.
"...they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away."
@Theophilus166@xanga - Thank you most excellent Theophilus for pointing that out to everyone. It seems so many believe in a rapture...
That's hilarious! I love a good sense of humor... but wait... I thought all dogs go to heaven!?!? ;D
@huginn@xanga -
This is legitimate - why isn't it?
If 'christians' are allowed to spout off with stupidity all the time, why shouldn't they reward someone who has done them a favor and closed a loophole in their blind and stupidly ridiculous ideas? I hope people pay this guy too, but for a completely different reason - he's completely right, and offering a legitimate service, according to the doctrines of 'christianity'. 'god' would be pleased, undoubtedly.
It's kind of taking advantage of the dumb/gullible, isn't it? Just say, for the sake of argument, that the Rapture is coming. Nobody knows when, however. So this guy's just raking in the dough for something that may happen centuries after he's dead and gone.
Enterprising, to be sure. But not that nice.
@Nicolai__X@xanga - This is legitimate - why isn't it?
Because there are no enforcement mechanisms:
A.) In case of the rapture there is no way for Christians to check up on their pets.
B.) In case the rapture never happens, there's ntothing to ensure that the man doesn't keep the money.
