    goldenrod by miss goldenrod

goldenrod I went to Harbor Beach this weekend, high up in Michigan's thumb.  As I drove, I saw the Lake Huron Circle Tour signs.  They're posted around each of the lakes, and if you were to follow all five, you would drive 6500 miles.  It sounds like a grand adventure...for those who like that sort of thing...but I don't know if I'd want to do it.

I will forever be a Michigan girl; I can't imagine leaving these lakes...but driving around them?  It wouldn't be so bad if the roads hugged each lake all the way, but they don't.  In some places, especially on Superior and Michigan, you can go a hundred miles without seeing the shore.  You're stuck looking at farmland, woods, swamps, run-down homes, junkyards, and the occasional small town.  Forget the gas prices for a moment: when you're following a road to see the lake, you want to see the lake!

michiganJust as you begin to wonder what the point of this journey is, you come around a turn in the road and your breath catches in a shocked gasp at the beauty before you.

God can seem like that too.  We can go days without getting a good sense of His presence.  There's always evidence of him: a sand-dune, sea-gulls, boats in dry-dock, fishflies spattering the windshield.  We occasionally even see glimpses of Him from the back-side of the trees, but we don't always see Him in his full-grandeur.

Driving the Circle Tour, one knows that simply because the lake can't be seen doesn't mean it isn't there, and no matter how long it's been since you've seen the water, if you remain on the road and don't quit, you'll see it again.

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your soul.  1 Peter 1:8-9

Do you ever have trouble seeing God in your life? How do you remind yourself that He's there even when you're having trouble feeling His presence?

    wow... where to start...

the hard times definitely get me to cling to God of which i'm kinda going through now...

the good times serve as moments of gratitude... where I'm learning to cling to Him hard as well...

though He may seem far... i normally run to the Word because therein lies His Breath where it gives life...

then i take a second and look up at the sky...

There will be rough patches but I just imagine that God is carrying me through the rough times.  I just get too bogged down by secular things I just forget at times about God and just get angry but I remind my self that regardless of what is going on, he will never abandon me.

Very good way of describing the whole "seeing God" -experience.

I don't always feel God's presence in my life-there are times when i feel he is extremely close (esp. during trials), and there are periods when He feels distant. But in my mind i know that God's presence is independent from our feelings; his presence should not be associated with a certain kind of emotion. I believe when you invite Him to be with you, He will always be there for you.

I have deer sitings.  That's how God lets me know that He is close.  One morning I was going to work, praying, just kind of moaning about my life, to God.  Suddenly, I neared a slight incline in the road and noticed a deer head.  Then another...then another.  I slowed down and stopped and watched a herd of deer cross the road!  I stopped complaining and started praising!  Another time, I was worried about my unborn child.  I'd had a miscarriage previous to my pregnancy and was just scared that something was going to happen.  As I was telling my husband this, I saw a doe and her fawn, drinking at a river we passed.  I was comforted.  I've seen a deer nursing two fawns on the side of road before.  These are God moments to me...

@Timi_in_England@xanga - "God's presence is independent from our feelings."  Exactly.  I think so many new converts believe that once converted, they'll always "feel" God.  But that is objective, and even in the Bible, many felt an absence of that presence.

@Punk_Rock_Mommy@xanga - Yeah, seeing a deer nursing fawns on the side of a road could only be Divinely appointed...because deer aren't stupid and doing such a thing is going against instict.

"What do you do when you stop feeling God at all?" I ask, about five years too late.

    Well done! :)

Boy, you are really a gifted writer.  I don't know about your 'speaking ability', but your writing is certainly gifted.

To answer:  I look at what is wrong with me.  We know that He will never leave or forsake us, so it's me.  It's pretty easy to get distracted by life, because we are living in it.  But that is really an excuse.  When I am prayed up, focusing on listening (not talking), it is quite amazing how God speaks and I hear Him!

Whenever I focus on me, I get in trouble.  Whenever I focus on God, amazing things happen!

What a timely post for me. So very timely. I just wrote an extremely long post on just this topic last night, about dry spells and wondering whether or not God is really there right now. I want so much for Him to reach me in such a way that I know it is Him for sure and there is no room for doubt.

What a great post! Seriously, that was just what I needed to hear (read)! Thank you, thank you, thank you! That's the perfect way to describe it!
