  • Movie Review: Hellboy II - The Golden Army

hellboy2 Another summer weekend, another movie - This time it's the next installment of the Hellboy series, a story originated from comic books about a demon who was summoned by Nazi occultists to only be rescued by Allied Forces.  Hellboy is then raised by the US's Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) where he's called to fight other paranormal bad guys.  Hellboy II: The Golden Army picks up following another paranormal event of a legendary elf prince who wishes to destroy humans by using an indestructible "Golden Army."

    Rating: DVDable

FTW: Hands down - Guillermo del Toro.  He proves once again how he's this crazy imaginative dude thinking of these beautiful highly immersive creatures.  The colors, fairies, creatures, and Hellboy himself is great to look at - and I have to respect his directing style.

FAIL: Unless you're a big hellboy fan - I think this movie is just ok.  The story doesn't go all too deep, though they do try to sell you these ornate alternative universes.  I love the amphibious "Abe" character and how there's much more attention on him this time around - but the movie only scratched the surface of their respective personalities.  They touched upon the idea of how when we're different, the world may not like us - but they never really pushed that all the way IMHO.

Can you take your mother to this? Yes you can - if she liked pan's labyrinth, she'll like this.  There's only one questionable scene I remember of Selma Blair's character (who has the power of being fully engulfed in flames) where she's in her underwear. But the scenes weren't sexualized so it felt a lot tamer than it sounds.  The only thing is, I could imagine my mom saying that I shouldn't date someone who can spontaneously combust cause it might ruin the upholstery.

Can you take your kids to this?  Yes you can - though there are scenes of drinking beer with hellboy's peer, Selma Blair in underwear, and elven knives taking lives.

The Christian Spin: The movie doesn't glorify hell in my opinion.  Hellboy is just a character in my mind and outside of the name, there's little that equates him to hell.

I really liked the idea that deep down inside we all want to be liked - and even noticed.  The "freaks" that are all part of the BPRD seem to struggle with this - how the world just doesn't accept them and easily turns on them.  Nevertheless, that shouldn't stop them from always doing the right thing - regardless of persecution, regardless of insults, rejection, and pain....

    Final Thoughts:
    Germans love David Hasselhoff....

I think at this point - everyone is waiting for the much anticipated Batman movie - people were cheering during that preview when I was watching Hellboy.  Here's a list of some of the bigger movies coming out for the rest of the summer:

The Dark Knight - July 18th
    The X Files - July 25th
    Step Brothers - July 25th
    The Mummy - August 1st
    The Rocker - August 1st
    Pineapple Express - August 8th
    Clone Wars - August 15th
    Tropic Thunder - August 15th

    That being said...

What movie are you looking forward to this summer?

I'm personally looking forward to dark knight and the mummy.  Hopefully they are both going to be great movies.

I'm looking forawrd the Dark Knight too much..Just because of Heath Legder.
I would only see Hell Boy for free. I'm not that big of a fan but I love the first one so knowing me I'll just sneak in.
    Have a nice day! = D

IMHO... the FX were great... Mr. Del Toro did a phenomenal job... it did have a Pan's Labyrinth feel as far as the creatures were concerned...

i liked it pretty much really isn't alot of story to build on and there really isn't alot of character development though save for Abe and stuff... and how abe falls in love...

plus certain things are predictable in a sense...

but i give this movie a fair rating...

i'm looking forward to The Dark Night though...

I'm looking forward to both these movies too.

Although, I am looking forward to the introduction of Harvey Dent(a far more complex and interesting character than the Joker) (Aaron Eckhart) a better actor.

Thanks for the throwback to better days on SNL.  Germans do love the Hoff.

The Dark Knight & The Mummy!

    @Talmid194@xanga -

Oh, dude! You think Harvey Dent/Two-Face is a more complex character than the Joker? Man oh man. The Joker is one of my favorite characters in contemporary fiction (yeah, I'm including Batman as contemporary fiction. Sue me? Whatever, there are Batman novels!). There's so much to him. He's a Hannibal Lector type character, with an unimaginable depth that blows my mind.

While I agree that I enjoy Aaron Eckhart as an actor on film more than Heath Ledger, I can't imagine Dent as being a more "complex" character. He is more of a stereotype as far as villains go.

    But, it's all opinion.

Jesus, I just totally nerded out on a xanga post. Classic.

I'm looking forward to pineapple express.

Just because James Franco is in it.

    And

i think you should add star trek to the list.
even though it's coming out next year.
it's star trek for goodness sakes.

Most of these movies i can wait for to come on cable

I don't watch movies as much as I used to.  It seems they've all been done before, just made over and given new titles (sometimes even the titles are the same).  I haven't been out to a movie since The Bucket List.  I just don't care to spend any of my hard-earned money for the privelege of wasting 2 hours of my time.  I'd much rather read a book, which I can get for free at the library.

But I do hope you enjoy Hellboy and the others.

  • nimbusthedragon@xanga

Yeah, I was super disappointed in it... I mean, it was "fun"... but not anything to write home about.  *sniff*

  • bittersunday@xanga

I really, really dislike going to movie theatres.  I'll wait until some of the movies come out, but for the most part I'm not interested in any of them.  Mostly hype, and old ideas trying to make a comeback.

  • GodlessLiberal@xanga

Nice work on the rhyming under "Can you take your kids to it?"

  • Roadkill_Spatula@xanga

For some reason, my daughters weren't very interested when I suggested going to see Get Smart.

It is funny that movies and TV shows get reincarnated repeatedly. At what point do they finally make Nirvana?

I must say, the current incarnation of Batman is vastly superior to those that have gone before. The TV show was entertaining, but most of the movies were tiresome.

Recently I watched Ghost Rider for the first time. Hollywood likes the idea of justice against the extremely wicked, but doesn't quite know what to do with general fallenness. Nick spared the cops and the kid, but having been around both cops and kids, I can tell you that they're anything but innocent.

I was kind of looking forward to Hellboy 2, but I'll probably just wait for the dvd to see it. I am, however, patiently awaiting The Dark Knight.

  • eucharis12@xanga

Great review! I really want to see Dark Knight and Step Brothers.. I love Will Ferrell, but I'm hoping that Step Brothers won't be as overkill as Talladega Nights.. that one was just annoying. Everyone is telling me that Dark Knight is amazing, so I'm excited for that one.

Hellboy 2 was fun; for sure that director has an amazing imagination, reminded me a lot of his work in Pan's Labyrinth
