  • Faith, Family, Academics and Football...

    miss dandelionby mrs. dandelion

We've blogged about Tim Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and the quarterback for the University of Florida (my alma mater) before. Recently, a reader sent in a clip of Tim giving a motivational speech at a UF summer football youth camp (fast forward to 0:58):

What struck me about this clip is his openess about his faith and his boldness to share Jesus with the kids. As a public figure he receives so many opportunities to tell others about Jesus and it's amazing that he really takes advantage of each event.

To know me is to know I'm a crazy Gator fan, but a guy like Tim Tebow, regardless of the team he played on I'd be a huge fan!

Do you find it admirable when public figures acknowledge Jesus? Have you ever acknowledged your faith in a public setting?

I work in a hospital where it can be very dangerous to openly express your beliefs... because this situations are very stressful to those around you and "threats" of being sued are very large.  Some hospitals are very adamant that one must keep those things to themselves... but I still tend to make it a point to be open where I can be.  Even more so if someone says something to me and leads into the conversation... I feel even more strongly that I ought to leap forward and offer encouragement or prayer.

There can be a fine line to tread, but I feel that... although I am not necessarliy shouting it from rooftops, or hospital tops, I can example peace in crazy situations.  (I work in an ICU)  I can pray for my patients while they are near death... and I may not see things change... but I know that I am still in a pivotal place to be praying!  That man's life may not be saved, but the prayers may still reach the family and those around him.

But with things like on television and large public masses, I tend to be very surprised when christianity is spoken of.  American Idol ending its season singing, "Shout to the Lord."  and granted, they omitted a word here or there... they still included Lord and I almost fell out of my seat.  In a nation that claims to be largely christian, it seems that we are still the minority.  Even our "christians" are often the worst cynics of God.

It would be impossible not to thank God for those of us that are in roles that they can be openly expressive of Him!

I become really annoyed when someone goes on about God, when they're supposed to talk about something that can relate to everyone.

@cadency@xanga - I think it's awesome you pray with your dying patients. My mom's a nurse too and I've heard some amazing testimonies from her experiences.

I still got so shocked when public figures talk about Christ too. I should look up the finale of American Idol on youtube. I heard about it, must have been really awesome. =)

I gave my final speech in college speech class on Jesus. Mainly related to Jesus and prophecy. While I of course can’t prove anything, I’m pretty sure the subject of my speech had to do with the terrible grade I received on said speech. (By terrible I mean my straight-A student self with a 98% pre-final was given a D- on the final…TERRIBLE.) Either way though, I enjoyed researching for and giving the speech. This and other times I’ve given faith-based speeches usually resulted in at least one conversation with another student, so I’d say it was worth the bad grade.

@la_faerie_joyeuse@xanga - I feel the same way, especially when it happens in politics and at public schools. It just ends up alienating anyone who doesn't share the same beliefs.

I do admire people that share their faith openly in a setting other than church.  However, I have very seldom taken that opportunity to do the same.  I remember one time when i was a teenager trying to share my faith with my best friend and was totally shot down.  I need to start picking up those pieces again...

I think it's awesome when people share their faith.

I find that very admirable (: It's great to have stuff like this.

I think it's great when people talk about God in a public setting, but I am always amazed that they get away with it in today's Godless society.  Every time I attend a graduation or some other public event where God is mentioned, I expect there to be some fall-out.  It's a pleasant surprise when there's not any.

We need to continue to encourage each other to speak out about God, for all our sakes'.
