Ceiling Cat vs. Basement Cat
by bob
A running joke on I Can Has Cheeseburger? is Ceiling Cat versus Basement Cat, or as they put it:
Confused? Perhaps we can let the the LOLcats explain...
In the beginning, there was Ceiling Cat:
Basement Cat wasn't always bad:
Ceiling Cat laid out his own version of the Ten Commandments:
Ceiling Cat is very popular:
Still confused? Perhaps you can learn more by reading the Bible that's being translated into LOLCat language!

Do you really think this is a help to Jehovah's word?
I love LOLcats. This is cute. :3
@Wukei@xanga - Christians are allowed to have a sense of humor.
@KechiNeko244@xanga - A sense of humour is one thing. I like some racey jokes. But look at the ten commandments there...if anyone actually learned the bible first from lolcats, or whatever it's called, this world would be worse than it already is.
J'adore lolcats.
I don't think anyone is learning their Biblical truths from LOL Cats. It's just meant to be funny. We get a lot farther with the unchurched by showing them we actually DO have a sense of humor.
I don't mind most of the pics at lolcats. The one of the ten commandments bothers me, though.
N teh ppl sayz, amen.
I think it's funny. My hubby looks at lolcat almost everyday.
I just don't get this. I really don't. I'm not judging; it's just not something I think is funny. I've never really understood why lolcats are funny unless the picture of the actual animal is funny. I do have a sense of humor; I promise. This just isn't where it is.
I know other people who love lolcats and are not Christians, and if this somehow reminds them of God while making them laugh, I'm not going to complain!
Cute cats + goofy humor + theology = three things at once that I like. Kind of like a bacon double cheeseburger.
If it was meant to be a serious denigration of religion (a la the "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster") I'd likely be upset, but I'm sure this is all in harmless fun with no blasphemies intended. And who knows, maybe someone somewhere will be inspired to pick up their Bible again because of it. Stranger things have happened.
My cat is one of the two out of three that believes in Ceiling Cat. I know this because Teh Ten Commanments of Ceiling Cat is posted right above where she eats her cheezburgers. (but don't tell the government, or else she'll have to take it down ... she won't like that at all!)
@junshien@xanga - I am teetering on the edge of agreement with you. I wouldn't make something like this myself, but if it is out on a public website, I believe God can use it for His glory because He can use anything.
wow, that's hilarious!! xD
@junshien@xanga - As I said, it's not something I would be comfortable making; however, I will leave space for the fact that it's an inroad into a site that millions of people visit. If someone sees it and thinks about God, then I'm glad. I also leave a little space for the fact that, as I said before, I don't "get" lolcats at all. If I did, maybe this wouldn't seem as offensive to me.
If I speak just from my own feelings, I find this kind of thing really sad. I agree that God has a since of humor, and I think it's hilarious. I go through life finding random things funny constantly. In my experience, I believe God's humor affirms truth; that doesn't mean it's saccharine. Some things in the Bible have a hard, ironic edge, but they are still good and true.
I also believe there is a since of wonder attached to all things that relate to God. I have an aversion to things that reduce Him, and I think things like this are in that category. Nothing about God is small, and this kind of thing seems to try to make Him smaller and more mundane somehow. It's like trying to carry all the water in the sea in a pail. It won't work, and in my opinion, it might be presumptuous to try.
Sorry, probably more than you wanted :)
@Pickwick12@xanga - I thnk it might be sort of a cat owner thing for a lot of people. When you look at pictures that remind you of the goofy stuff that your own cats do, it makes it kinda funny. At least that's how it is for me.
As for the whole ceiling cat thing, it's not really that relevant to me. Some of the pictures on there are funny, some aren't. I take it for what it is...something that can be kind of amusing by people with too much time on their hands!!
@junshien@xanga - I can see exactly what you're saying. It's a hard balance. I personally don't see this as something that is making fun of God...I see it as goofy pictures of cats doing goofy things, and maybe a tad-bit sac relig.. Reverence for God is something that is out the window, even in a lot of churches, and I cringe at the "Jesus is my homeboy" attitude that can get taught as a result. You know, it's a hard balance to find between having Jesus as your best friend and having reverence of the Trinity as the Creator, Beginning and End, God of all Creation. KWIM?
Jesus does bridge the gap between us and God, so we can approach Him as our Father, but should we treat God as an entity that will give us everything we want just because we ask? Absolutely not.
So yeah, I'm not trying to throw out a solution because I don't have one. I'm just saying I get what you're say and agree to a great extent. Whether God would see this type of thing as irreverent, I really don't know. I guess I'd just say that if an individual sees it that way and is offended, they shouldn't look at it. You can be reverent yourself, but you can't force someone else to be ("you" in general sense).
and let us not forget Teh LOLCat Bible
my Lord has a sense of humor.... at least, He'd better. i don't like people who can't laugh at themselves, i certainly wouldn't like God if He couldn't.
I think God has quite the sense of humor. We're created in his image, right? And we have the ability to laugh and not take ourselves too seriously, right?
I just don't understand this constant need some have to be somber in their reverence. You can be reverent and laugh. God gave us the ability to be joyful, to smile. Christ came and walked the earth as a man, don't you think he laughed with his friends and made jokes? People wanted to be around him, and I like to think part of that was because he wasn't always somber. How could he have wanted the little children to come to him if he was?
I understand where the argument that "lolcats is bad...mmkay" comes from, I just don't agree with it. Anything that opens the door to talk about things is positive, and if it makes someone laugh and feel less intimidated or less like God is some big untouchable bringer of wrath... well that's just fine with me.
@Wukei@xanga - I think you've got a point, but it may be premature. Actually, a lot of the Ceiling and Basement cat jokes are poking light fun at Christians... then again, they also like to pick on just about every religious group that believes in the Judeo-Christian G-d. If someone suggested evangelising from/teaching your children with/Preaching from the Lolcat Bible, then yeah, they'd be going waaaaay too far. And I'm sure there are those who would take offense, what the the Bible being Holy and all, but I think so long as it's intent is just to be humorous and leave it at that, there's not much harm in it.
Basement Cat Vs. Ceiling Cat! YES! This is amazing.
ah, lolcats. Seriously some of the funniest stuff online.
dear lord. people are so uptight sometimes. i think god is a-okay with a joke now and then.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS..HAHA
Really gave me a good laugh!
hahaha I LOVE lolcats.
absolutely disgusting. This is God's very Word to us that these people are mocking. I'm ashamed to think that this is viewed as funny, but alas, that is the place we have come to. Religion is now merely religion. Worse, I fear what will come of this. IT is NOT a JOKE. IT IS THE WORD OF GOD. HOLY, SACRED, DIVINELY INSPIRED.
In the beginning was the Word. and the Word was with God, and the WORD WAS GOD.
