Question of the Day: God and work?
from heyyoulady
There may be days when work feels like a curse. There may be other days when you feel great satisfaction in what you do. Believe it or not, both come from God. I have struggled with involving God in my career, and I'd like your input, whether you're an office worker, a farmer, a construction worker, a medical professional, a race car driver, a professional surfer, a student, or a stay-at-home mom....
A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? -- Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 (NIV)How do YOU make God a bigger part of your work life?

I could write a comment the size of a post on this. I'll try to be brief. When I went to law school, I thought it was so I could defend religious organizations and thus serve God through my career, but God had a different plan. Now, I practice in an area of the law I didn't really even know existed prior to law school that has nothing to do with religion. BUT, I am around people who need God and who need to see His love exhibited. And for me, that's how I try to make God a bigger part of my work life -- by being His hands to those who are hurting and, most often, His ears for those who need to talk. It's all about the people.
I believe that part of being a true Christian is doing a hard day's work. For one parent, that sometimes means staying home, taking care of the kids, cleaning the house, etc. There's nothing wrong with that.
I've failed in this, however. I am currently without a job. I've blamed a lot of it on my handicap, and I've made the excuse 'but my mother needs me at home right now.' This Fall I intend to go back to school. In the meanwhile, I'm going to keep myself busy elsewhere (I'm not saying where cuz there's a verse that states if you look for your reward [and applause] here on Earth, you won't get it in Heaven.)
As for the question:
How do YOU make God a bigger part of your work life?
I am an artist. I have used that ability to create coloring books. I've only scanned one onto my website. http://www.heartcatcher.net (I have kept the same name as my mother's rabbit farm because every bible story should be a heart-catcher.) I plan to continue to make every story from the bible into a colouring book. This way, children can experience EVERY story of the bible, not just the most popular.
I work in an area where a lot of people already know Jesus, but I still try to bring Him into my work every day. I work with kids and I feel like I am a Christian example and model for them, so I ask God to help me to show them His love. I also try to show them respect and have a lot of things in my classroom that will show that I am a Christian--like my Bible on my desk, or Bible verses on the wall by my desk, or wearing Christian jewelry or shirts. I don't preach to them, but am hoping they'll make the connections.
Also, I try to show a lot of respect to my bosses. This is something that a lot of people don't do, but the Bible says to submit to their authority, so I always try to do that, even when it's not the popular choice!
Cool...i'm inspired by Wukei's idea on creating colouring books. As an art & design student, i often find inspirations from the things of God and make them a concept for my work. Depending on the topic of the assignments, it varies. I often take this opportunity to plant seeds among my non-christian friends as i explain the concept of my works inspired from God. God Himself is the Greatest Artist and Designer of all! =D
Read Revelife entries. Listen to the Christian Radio during my commute. Sometimes listen to in at my desk. Talk to Non-Christians like they're Christians and tell them about the good things in my life that God has done.
Thank Him for all things....
I am a teacher so now I am out for the summer which I find it MORE difficult to make God bigger during the off times than when school is in session.
During the school year I use my breaks between classes to read my Bible, I have a constant stream of Christian music coming from itunes, and I make it a point to text a friend or multiple friends scriptures. This really seals the deal for me--in order to text friends scriptures, I must be in the Word to be given the words to text. This helps the most!
Now, how to I make God a bigger part of my 10 week vacation? That's my question to figure out this summer!
I give back 1/10 of what is belong to God.
Well, I am a stay at home mom.
One way I make God a part of my life during the day if to listen to calvary chapel's radio station HopeFm (www.hopefm.net) in my area. That way I can listen to good Christian preaching and singing as I go through my day. It is also good for my children to listen to.
So that would be one way.
I'm also a teacher, and I find it necessary to pray because it is such a tough job. I pray for strength to make it through the days and I also pray for my students. The kids need Him. This is a simple but Biblical prayer I pray for them:
"Make my students listen to correction and command them to repent of their evil. Straighten out their lives so they may embrace You."
It is based on Job 36:10 and Rom. 9:10. If you knew the students and their backgrounds, you would understand why I chose this prayer for them. These are ways I keep God involved in my career.
I'm a student, so during the school year, the best thing that I feel I can do is to constantly build relationships with my peers and be a good Christian influence. I definitely avoid cursing and using God's name in vain, which begins to set me apart from many of my peers, and I try to do other things that sort of show a Christian, like being more forgiving and helpful than perhaps just a person couldn't be by themselves. (Does that make sense?)
I'm an accountant. When I started my career, I was working for a public accounting firm. After about 1 1/2 years, I was beginning to feel like my job had little purpose. I recognized that public accounting was a necessary thing, but I wanted to do something that had more meaning. So, I quit and took a job at a Christian nonprofit organization that serves troubled youth and struggling families. This way, though I am still working as an accountant, I am also contributing toward a greater purpose - helping to bring Christ to youth and families. We also have weekly prayer time in the office and often pray for one another. On a more personal level, I have a small calendar that has daily devotions - I try to say a few small prayers throughout the day.
After being a full time youth leader for almost 2 years I felt God calling me to a change. I had no idea what that meant except for the fact that I was supposed to move back to my home state and "rest". After a few months (the longest months of my life) I needed a job (bills) and just wanted whatever job I could get. Well, God blessed me with a job working with children at an afterschool program. It has been extremely difficult some days-- as in me coming home crying because they were so awful to me. But then I experience moments where i see God's hand so strongly....even guiding the things I say. I know it is ministry and everyday I try and shine my light for Him...and love those children unconditionally.
Jesus Himself mentioned that if any person were to make a child stumble it would be better for them to have a millstone tied to their neck and then have them dropped in the ocean. He really does love kids!
I,too, am a teacher. I have been blessed for 30 years to work in a Christian school and be able to bring Christ into every subject, including math. I loved it. This year, I have worked in a charter school one onb one with the students. It is a public school but I am still able to use my listening heart to hear the cries of each student. I feel blessed because I don't see the outside of a person but rather their heart. My smile and acceptance of each student has allowed them as well as other teachers to feel comfortable to talk to me about problems in their lives. As I listen to the still small voice of the Lord, I am able to minister to them in love, acceptance and wisdom from God. It blesses me each time someone wants to talk because they knew that I would listen to them without condemnation.
I think sometimes we focus a lot on vocally declaring our faith, but being vocal about or faith needs to go hand in hand with how we live our lives on a daily basis. People want to see us live the Gospel as much as we speak it. I try to find time to take people aside and ask if there is anything I can pray for them about and if there is I pray right then and there with them. Also to be patient, hard working, loving, positive, and in a nutshell - have a Christ-like attitude :)
I envy the people above who said they work in a mainly Christian environment. I work for a publishing company in their PR department. It's a great job, but it has its moments... and it's located in an extremely liberal, extremely pro-gay rights, anti-war side of our county. There are few people that have any issue with the constant language that is floating around, let alone some of the topics of conversation. It's been a rough transition coming from a Christian college, but I've found 2 other Christians and we draw encouragement from each other. Some days are harder than others, but slowly, people are learning that we don't appreciate the language or the conversation, and try to change the way they talk and the things they discuss when they're around us. Recently I had the opportunity to pray for a friend of a coworker who was going through surgery, and while there hasn't been much of a response from the coworker, it was a great opportunity to let her know that I care, and to let others know that they can come to me with those situations.
it's hard for me to involve God in my current job. I work at a fish and chicken carryout that involves communicating with people and dealing with ALL kinds of people...and when time gets tough and when i have to deal with the complex custumer....i start cursing and i end up forgetting about what i learned in church. esp. when we all constantly learn about how God always waits and God is patient....and we should be that way to...it's hard for me to remember that. also because not everyone at my job is christian...it makes it even harder to realize God is everywhere watching.
I am a wife, and a mother of two teenager boys. I also watch children to help out with the bills.
So I am constantly, cleaning, cooking, doing laundry, answering questions, and assisting people who are bored. Everyone comes to me and wants or needs me to do "something".
So.. what helps me is this. "We are to do everything as unto the Lord. As If I'm serving him instead of them. Knowing that I am pleasing him gives me a good "jump" to keep doing my tasks. Even if they are repeated day in and day out.
Knowing that I am right with him gives me a good rest.
Christina
