Christian Celebrity Profile: Dwayne Wade
by mr. oakI love basketball. In fact, by the time you read this entry, I'm probably sitting on my couch watching the NBA finals. I think there are so many great players in the NBA right now and often times i'm surprised when I watch a game and see some of the players praying. Could God be on the court too?
It's hard to imagine that through all the fame and intensity of the game, that God wouldn't be lost - but He's there. Which brings me to this one story that one of my favorite students, Brian, in my youth group shared. I'll quote his words:
As I sometimes read the tabloid, I hear about celebrities buying their parents the most lavish and fancy gifts such as expensive jewelry or cars. As I was surfing the web, I found an article that amazed me. In the article, Dwayne Wade, a NBA superstar, buys his mother a church. It was cool to hear that one of my favorite NBA player helps her mother start a church to allow the opportunity for others to come to house of the lord and accept God as our lord in savior. Also, there can never be enough churches in this world. Mrs. Wade said "We're in here today because of God's goodness and God chose to use the heart of my son to do this for us ... and he trusts the heart of his mama. Ain't that something?" full articleYes, you read that correctly. Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat bought his Mom a church. It might be easy to say "sure, that's because he's loaded." But when I think about it, I've never even bought my mom a Bible! To be able to support the woman that bore you like that - is just too awesome and inspiring...already Dwayne Wade has inspired me to be a better son. In the end, I think Brian made the keenest observation:
I was touched to read that Wades mother completely changed after she accepted the Lord into her life. I truly believe that God has a plan for every individual in this world so be patient. Well thats all for me today.
Amen, Brian.
In what ways have you supported others in their faith?

great sharing. thank you! its definately a privilidge to do things to help bring our parents closer to God :)
That is so cool to know D. Wade is a Christian, and that he would buy his mother a church! We need more role models like him around.
Wow. I never knew Dwayne Wade was Christian. Haha, as much as I didn't like the fact that he helped the Heats win against the Mavericks, I truly admire him for his crazy skills. And in a celebrity world filled with party girls and uh, people who need help, it's always awe-spiring to hear of someone who's using their celebrity status to help others out.
To answer the question, I'd say just being there for them when they need someone to hear them out. Because sometimes, all someone needs is someone else to talk to so that they can get their thoughts straight.
That's tres cool... never heard of the guy before.. I'm sure that'll be sacriligious to some of you.. but a guy who would buy his mum a church, that's something about that lavish generosity that reminds me of God and is so attractive and touching
cool story
