Bible in the Bathroom
a couple days ago, i posted tips on how to get regular on your personal quiet times. one of the tips suggested putting a bible in the bathroom. but blgr from xanga had a great point in one of his personal experiences:I used to do the bible in the bathroom thing when I was small, but dad told me it's disrespectful to read the bible there.
Any thoughts?
so, i lob this back to you - since it's obvious to do it elsewhere, i post this question for you: is it better to spend time with God in the bathroom or better to not do it at all?

In the bathroom...
In college I shared an apartment with six other girls, sometimes the only quiet time you could get for prayer was in the shower... so you take it where you can get it...
God wants to see you ANY time...
I despise reading in the restroom. I am a poo/pee and leave type... ha ha. One of my friends always would read in the restroom and play with his portable gaming device (not a sexual euphamism.. lol) when he went to the restroom. I would hate it when I was waiting on him and he was in there just chilling and playing games or reading... ha ha.
My best friend's roommate used to always read his Bible in the bathroom. He said it was relaxing and the only time no one bothered him.
I think it's important to read where you feel comfortable and focused. I couldn't read in the bathroom but more power to you if you can.
Although, I don't read in the potty, God doesn't care where you're meeting Him, even if it is in the restroom. As long as you're meeting him, right? And like so many people said, it might be the ONLY place where you have privacy and can be focused.

I think if someone doesn't feel conviction against doing it - that God will know that their heart is to spend time with Him. I'm sure He would like your whole day, rather than a few minutes though - but like a true friend who loves you right where you are at in life, He will accept it graciously.
I think if you do feel that the Holy Spirit is tugging on your heart, or perhaps a roommate, spouse, etc is caused to stumble (provoked to be angry, etc) because of your habits, that you might want to examine other ways to "fit God into your day".
Overall, I think it's about your heart condition, not about how, when, or where you perform.
On one hand I'm sure God appreciates us making the effort, but on the other hand I'm sure he'd appreciate you making time other than when you go to relieve yourself.
My pastor mentioned once that there are twenty four hours in a day. How many of those hours do we spend watching a movie or tv? Yet we can only spare a few minutes for God?
God understands we work, that's just something in the world that we have to do in order to support ourselves. But we make time to cultivate our realtionships with friends and family.
I don't tend to cultivate my realtionships with family and friends in the bathroom/restroom.
I'm not against the idea, as I said any effort is good in God's eyes and for our own spiritual life. I do read in the actual bath, though not my bible as knowing my luck I'd drop it into the water and ruin it!
I'd like to think people didn't just confine themselves to this one time if that was where they did have 'devotional' times with God. The again why confine ourselves to one set time of the day, we can pray in the car, on a journey, as we walk to work. Sometimes at work I read notes, I sing worship songs as I stack shelves.
@Doubledb@xanga - agreed, ha - I've never understood reading in the bathroom (and never even heard of people playing Nintendo DS and whatnot in the bathroom - yucka)

I figure if it's a quiet moment and you're just uhh... sitting there, why not pray/speak to God. That ongoing communication and intimacy with God should be part of every moment of my life, so I won't stop it just cause I'm involved in... certain activites...

@dorfusdunkin - Well said, I was thinking the same thing, that God loves to meet with you anytime, anywhere; but shouldn't we, if we are striving to be more Christlike and mature into the disciples God desires us to be, also desire to spend more quality time with God than just the few minutes here and there when we can catch a break because we had to use the bathroom. I know I wouldnt want one of my friends to call me ONLY when she's in the bathroom, now if she does I laugh it off and we chat anyway because she makes a point to call me all throughout the day, not just when all of the sudden her busy schedule has to be put on hold for 2 minutes. And I believe that God has the same opinion, He will not disregard that effort, but He does desire more. And so should we.
Spend it in the bath room than not at all.
It is how your heart is at the time, not what your body does.
I do my best q/ts there.

btw the only way it gets disrespectful is if you run out of tp and start ripping pages out and using them. I think God digs it when we meet him anywhere even in the bathroom. I get inspired with designs for church projects while showering sometimes is that bad? I don't think so.
