  • Evolution or Design?

    from Divinity2B
darwin Darwin or Design. I became really interested in this topic back in highschool -- during my biology classes. We were studying the human body, all it's functions and then later switched to genetics. I remember listening and reading up on all the information and just thinking to myself "How can people say it all evolved?" I just could not understand that mindset -- the whole idea just didn't make much sense to me. A monkey slowly evolving into a human being (with no fossil evidence whatsoever to back up the theory!!!) No way!!! I was not made by chance! It was not just luck that I am who I am today! Forget about it! As we studied the genetic make-up of the body I was blown away by the fact that every little part was so well thought out. Everything had a purpose, everything had a meaning! There is so much complexity there...it's just not possible for it all to have simply evolved. Chance and necessity could not have created something so wonderful! There's just too much there that can't be explained! There more I studied, the crazier the whole Darwin theory seemed!

Later on we also studied the Evolution Theory itself. Honestly, you could often find me laughing at the absolute rediculous of it all!!! People say it's hard to believe in God -- because there's no evidence there. Well, I say just look around you! You dont' have to go to a labatory to see the complexity of the cell or the atom or the molecule. You don't have to see all the tiny details...just look around you at nature! It's a lot harder to believe in the evolution theory. It takes a lot of faith to say God does not exist! All creation points to a creator! There is just so much diversity and complexity in everything around you (nature), and so much that just cannot be explained by natural law. As the scientific world becomes stronger, it is becoming harder and harder to prove the Evolution Theory and harder and harder to disprove the creation theory (design). Even scientist themselves are now saying that if they look at the evidence objectively, and they go where the data lead them...there's a creator. There's a designer! Darwin's theory is false!

I say man simply doesn't want a power over them. They don't want a God who controls everything! Man wants to be his own god. If God truly does exist, then sin and its consequences exist as well. Man does not want consequences...so he created a theory that makes God non-existant. Now man can live as HE pleases! Yet deep inside, I say EVERYONE KNOWS there is a God! An atheist is just a person in great denial! Everyone has a soul -- and every soul knows there is a God. Why is it when tragedy strikes, even the atheist cries out to a higher power? Yes, he knows! He just doesn't want to admit it! But hey, that's just MY theory!

Lastly, if there is no God in heaven....what is our purpose in life? There's absolutely NO point to our life! But if God DOES exist, then we DO have a purpose -- to live for Him here on earth...and get to heaven to live with Him for all eternity. Now THERE'S a goal! There's a purpose...there's a reason to want to live! That's what I'm striving for. Plus, it's a much better theory than that my great-great-great-great-great-great...grandma was a monkey!!!  WHATEVER!!!

    uh-huh

I wonder if they will ever just give in and admit what they know - that they were wrong about evolution the whole time.

i read/heard(?) somewhere that even Darwin, when nearing death, took back his own theory and claimed it was wrong.  i have to fact-check that.  but yeah, Tim Keller has a chapter on your point too - that EVERYONE believes in God, even they don't know it or admit it.  all our natural thinking and morals come from God. b/c if people truly believed and lived according to Natural Selection, then it would be perfectly fine to kill weak people, not care about the poor, and only live for the advancement of the strong/smart/beautiful.  but most people would say that kind of behavior is despicable!

anyway, i'm getting carried away. great post!

I absolutely agree with your theory! :)
There is a God and creation shows it. I never understood why it took so much out of people to admit to design.
You leave a neat pile of paper in the room and the window is open, when you come in and see it all in disarray you think "man, I left the window open, the wind did it" and then you leave and come in again and see it all piled up again and you think "man, the wind did it".  No you don't you wonder, "who did it!?"
I will not leave my complex and beautifully made human body to the chance of the wind knocking a few cells together, there has to be an intelligent force behind it and it's not faeries.

you really don't get it do you?  It is not a scientist's job to comment on whether there is a creator or not....it is a scientists job to examine as objectively as possible how the system physically works...not the metaphysics behind it all.  Its abundantly clear you don't have a strong grasp of Darwin's theories.  No one has ever stated that humans evolved from monkeys.  Darwin's theory is gracefully simple, ever heard of occam's razor?  Anyways, the mantra is 'survival of the fittest'...those species that have genetically mutated favorable traits to fit their environment by chance are those that survive.  Now, clearly you take issues with the key phrase 'by chance'.  That's fine.   But you have to understand that it is not a scientist's job to speculate...without any evidence...in a divine prescence controlling it all.  Personally I believe in evolution because I appreciate the things science has done for humanity.  After all, they do have a better track record than the church on explaining the physical truths and reality of our immediate natural world.
That being said, a brief review of history will find that most modern western science was born from christianity.  Francis Bacon, Paricellcus, etc....
I view the world in a very scientific lens....when it comes to issues of the natural world.  The very fact that we can witness (through scientific observation and method) the order and design of it all...that it's not just chaos, is a testament and affirmation of a creator, a god, in my opinion.  I see how it all works, how god created all of the systems and they all fit together perfectly.  Science is merely the lens through which we can view god's creation in all of its glory.  God gave humanity reason and logic, i doubt he intended us not to use it.
That being said, you can continue believing in a 6000 year old earth (wtf? that's not even in the bible..), a 6 day creation, a heaven where you go if your good, and hell where bad people go, santa claus, cupid, monsters under your bed and all the two-dimensional literal interpretations of the bible you can handle...that's fine, that's your choice. But I warn you, you are severely underestimating the wisdom and truth of the bible.  The bible is not a history textbook, it is so much more than that.  If you want to take everything in the bible literally, I also must warn you that you run the risk of imprisonment because slavery is illegal (leviticus.....).
THis is not a post designed to bash the bible or christianity, rather it is a plea to fellow christians to wake up and realize that our wisdom does not manifest itself in literal stories of how this earth was created.  The bible is a teaching for the soul, not the flesh.

thank god the guy above me had at least something intelligent to say, until he started pumping up the bible...  this post is horrible.  it's like getting punched in the face with lies.  by mike tyson.  i don't have time to try to educate you, and judging by what you have written here i think it would by futile anyway.  But i can tell you that you have a very misinformed, shallow, elementary understanding of what evolution by natural selection.  stop taking what your ministers and christian writers say, like tim keller and whoever else, as fact.  They tell you lies, and now you are telling lies.

The basis of science of testing hypotheses. Intelligent design is not testable. Thus, intelligent design is not science, QED. Intelligent design can be discussed in philosophy class (as it should be because it's very interesting and sparks a lot of debate), but it is not science because it provides no testable material or evidence.

Also... it seems to me that you didn't pay very much attention in your biology classes. We did not evolve from monkeys. Rather, we are related to chimps and other apes because we evolved from a common ancestor into the species we are today. And the idea of irreducible complexity? That is giving up. There is an answer out there, and it will be found through the process of testing. Saying that something is too complex to have evolved and therefore must have been designed is a cop out. Science doesn't give up. It keeps working and working until an answer is found and new theories are created. Did Copernicus give up because everyone else thought the sun revolved around the earth? No, he kept finding evidence for his ideas, and eventually they became accepted because they were a TESTABLE alternative to the accepted hypothesis. Intelligent design is NOT testable. It is merely giving up.

I suggest you read "The Battle Over the Meaning of Everything" by Gordy Slack. It's a very good book, and you can probably appreciate it since you seem to have a lot of questions. :) Slack doesn't conceal his own opinions, but he presents both sides of the argument fairly and it makes for a very interesting read.
