  • a miracle

you probably heard about one of Jesus' miracles where he feeds 5,000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.  physically, it's unfathomable what this would look like...would the bread regenerate inside the basket?  would the fish multiply before your eyes?

i once heard an interesting interpretation of this by an atheist (which was also revisited in a recent movie i've seen.)  and that interpretation was that perhaps it wasn't a miracle after all.  the fish didn't multiply, the bread didn't regenerate.  keep in mind these people were starving...they haven't had a good meal in days.  but despite all that, as the food was being passed around...each person thought of the person next to them...and passed on partaking in the food so that the other person can eat. in fact, some even added their own food.  as a result - the food was continually passed on because of the love each person had for another.

and after i heard that i smiled....because even in that, it was more of a miracle than ever before.

and in that, the challenge i think of is on what 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish will you pass on so that others can eat.  think about the victims of hurricane katrina, the thousands that are still living in poverty, and the person sitting next to you that needs it more than you do...

Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life - John 4: 13-14

    Interesting post.

The atheist's comment made me smile too -- that too would have been wonderful. God does want us to share our wealth with the less fortunate, so it would have been absolutely amazing if all the people in that crowd had selflessly shared what they had with those around them. The world today would be much better place if we practiced that a lot more!
