  • Humor: Evolution of Praise....Displays

    oakleaf by mr. oak

I've been in church for a good portion of my life, and a big part of sunday worship is the praise.  but i also wondered how praise might evolve over time - especially how praise is conveyed and displayed to a congregation.  overall, things have changed quite a bit

    stonetabletSTONE
don't know for sure, but i heard that back in the day, praise wasn't in the traditional music form - praise in itself was spoken...often poetically or in some other form.  eventually these words would be sung along with a harp and other instruments.  if i'm not mistaken, the book of psalms are meant to be songs - derived from the greek word Psalmoi which means "songs sung to a harp." (thanks wikipedia!!!)

    hymnal BOOK
fast forward a couple hundred years and we got the classic hymnal books.  remember these?  i remember the full score written in it along with 4 different verses and the classic "Amen" at the end.  and then some of them got super complicated and had codas, and repeats, and you messed it all up by singing the wrong verse and amen earlier than everyone else.  good job winner!

    projector1 PROJECTOR
an improvement in display cause now instead of our heads being buried, everyone can look together at the words.  gotta love the smudging pens, and chords written alongside for the praise team to follow and of course the shadow hand that guides the clear sheets up and down and sometimes put the words backwards and spends about 2 minutes trying to figure out the right way to flip it so it displays properly.  good times.

    digiprojector DIGITAL PROJECTOR
Seeing a lot of churches with these now - but high tech digital projectors.  people are even adding cool graphics, themes, videos and extras.  backgrounds of forest, mountains, birds, and sheep abound.

    karaoke KARAOKE
it's only a matter time before people put two and two together.  think about it, singing praise now is only a stone's throw away to praise karaoke!  from machines that allow you to adjust the pitch and tempo, to super cheesy backgrounds to glowing words and bouncing balls.  and let's not forget a score at the end telling you what percentage you praised God.
btw, the praise team would still be around tho, but instead of using instruments, it would be guitar hero instruments....and rockstar drum kits.

    christianidol CHRISTIAN IDOL
before you know it, FOX will take advantage of this phenomenon and start Christian Idol.  but then the show will quickly cancel after someone cites the second commandment.

    matrixDIRECT NEURAL INPUTS
after replacing the 10th $500 lightbulb from digital projectors, praise will no longer be projected or printed.  instead, direct neural inputs will be uploaded to our brains where we will automatically know all the words to the songs.  along with this, we'll also strangely know kung fu.

bottomline - praise is evolving, both in music and how its displayed.  i've seen churches that display bible verses on projectors and kids not bringing their bibles as a result.  there are many wonders to technology, but i wonder how it will affect the way we worship.  i mean, if we kept to the old ways we'd still be chanting and wearing robes, but we've come a long way.

in your point of view - how do we maintain the experience of what praise is meant to be?

    hahaha Christian idol.

praise is when we worship God, and that doesn't necessarily mean there has to be music. But I love music, and it is great that we have a part of that during Sunday service.Somehow, I think keeping it simple is the best - one acoustic guitar, and let the vocals lead the way.

when it comes to musical praise, i have to admit i enjoy it much more when the musicians are really talented.  i've been to churches where the band was mediocre (simply b/c of lack of band members) to churches where the band was made of pros or near-pros.  for me personally, i have a hard time focusing when the music is not good.  but i've definitely experienced the Holy Spirit in praise/worship even with just a guitar in the background.  i think that's all it's really supposed to be - a time to encounter the Holy Spirit by happily acknowledging God and his attributes.

Those projector light bulbs are expensive!!! :P might as well junk the projector and get a new one for about a few hundred more and get the product warranty, that's how I would justify buying a new unit =)

There is something like Christian Idol, but it's on a cable network, forgot which channel, will tell you later.

Call me old fashioned...but I miss the old ways the church was.  I miss singing out of the hymnal.

I just miss hymns, sung the old way with the organ.  There was something comforting about that.  I do love that my new church still sings hymns, even if they are sung to a band with guitar and drums.  It's still those old, familiar, comforting words.

Even though it's not exactly the same...the comfort still is and God is still present.
